Re: 2002 4Runner w/o tow package

Most of the questions have been answered and pertain to automatics transmissions but for the record....

I have towed our 17 with both a second generation 4Runner(V6 3.0L 5 speed) and our current 2000 V6 3.4L 5 speed. No problems with either. All 4runners seem to squat down in the back when loaded (especially the second generation ones with the leaf springs) and can benefit from the equalizing hitch. However, we towed our 17 for 3 years before getting an equalizer from Reace. I think it really helps stop the porpoising after bumps on the highway as well as make the trailer and truck less sensitive to how we distribute the weight when loading up.

The seven pin connector as installed by toyota does not likely have all the pins wired/connected. One pin is reserved for the ouput of the brake controller as described above.

The receiver part of the hitch on your truck doesn't change when you use an equalizing hitch. The tow ball portion (that slips into the 2" square opening and is held in pace with the pin) changes and you add to torsion bars that run back to plates bolted onto the trailer A-frame leading to the ball socket for the hitch. Sounds complex buts its really simple. I will take some photos next time I hook up....

I see now what a WDH functions as. I have an antisway bar on my current popup trailer. The WDH functions the same with the added weight distribution.
