5.0 Hitch: Curt vs Reese

Our Escape 5.0 is to be delivered in about 2 weeks (in Texas) & we are getting our F-150 Super Crew Cab truck (with short bed) outfitted with a hitch. One trailer shop is recommending a Curt 16K slider over the Reese 15K slider. Any comments as to the differences and/or experiences with either brand?

We have a Frontier Crew Cab Short bed (5') and will be using the B&W Patriot hitch for our used 5.0. We will have to mount it a little behind the axle but we have our Scamp 5er hitch there now and it tows beautifully. The Patriot allows you to move the pivot point 4" back from the center of the hitch. We think this will give us the 29" we need between the crew cab window and the hitch center. I suspect your bed is larger than ours - you might be able to use this and not have to get a slider.

Just a thought.

Hi: driessa... We have a 6'1" bed on our Frontier and had a 6'6" bed on our shortbox Sierra. Neither one requires the slider but we have it any how. Never been slid and the way it was set up wouldn't work any way!!! Only when we changed trucks did we discover it wouldn't have worked. Ours is a Husky 16K EZRoller and is overkill. Hitch shops outside of the one that Escape uses don't seem to understand the concept of light weight fiberglass. Alf

Fran and Dave,

I too have a Frontier (short bed) V6. How well does the 5.0 tow and break with the Frontier. I am seriously considering the 5.0 and would like to avoid buying a new truck if at all possible.

Thanks,
Mike

H Mike,
Well, we will know after we pick up our Escape in Chilliwack on July 15th. Our local trailer shop guys, who are REALLY good, thought it would be fine. They deal in B&W hitches although Amazon was cheaper and they said that if it were them, they would order it from Amazon. It arrived in less than a week. Planning to have it installed sometime next week. They have seen our Scamp and we told them the Escape is similar in size and weight. Reace also thought it should work. Our Frontier tows the Scamp 5er really nicely so we are hopeful that it will do well with the Escape also.

Our dilemma is that we still have our Scamp and need the Scamp hitch to move it around. So we are waiting and hoping the Scamp will sell before we need to put in the Escape hitch.... The trailer guys said they could rig something up for us but we'd rather just get the Scamp sold!! Know anyone who wants a really lovely 2005 Scamp 19' Deluxe

Hi Fran & Dave,

Thank you for the information, and would love to hear your thoughts once you pick up your 5.0. I just love the floor plan and placement of the queen size bed as sleep is very important to me. I am retiring at the end of the year and moving into a home that has gated side access for parking my 5.0, which I will order after the first of the year. Did you go to Chilliwack to order yours? That's my plan.

Currently, I'm not aware of anyone looking for a Scamp, but will keep my eyes and ears on alert!

Thank you,
Mike

That's okay, appreciate the smiley face. Good luck with your 5.0, no doubt you will have lots of fun days in it!! And, I still would like to know your experience towing and such, if you don't mind.

Thanks,
Mike

You didn't do anything wrong. An "8" immediately followed by a ")" is interpreted as the code for one of the smiley faces: 8)
Put a space between them and there's no unintended symbol: (2008 )
It's an annoying characteristic of the crude coding of most discussion forums.

Now back to hitches...

An Escape 5.0 is so light that any fifth-wheel hitch is likely to be more than strong and solid enough - certainly any of the mainstream "15K" (15,000 lb) designs will be. As long as the hitch includes side-to-side tilt, it should just be a matter of convenience:
  • ease of mounting and dismounting the removable head
  • are mounting rails or pads left on the box floor obtrusive
  • ease of latching and unlatching
  • method for sliding position, if desired
  • et cetera

Hello,

noticed that you traded your Scamp 5r for an Escape 5.0. We are thinking of doing the same thing....primarily because we want a larger bath (currently have a side bath in the Scamp) and a more comfortable seating area. The look of the steps into the queen bed in the Escape looks like a good plan for us too.

Why did you decide to switch? would you do it again? There aren't many 5.0 in our area (CO) so would have to buy new.

Did you sell your Scamp quickly?

thanks.

Hi katinfo,
Yes, we did sell our Scamp 5er. We really liked our Scamp. It was well made and towed beautifully with our Frontier short bed. It was the deluxe model so the queen bed was positioned side to side and could not be rigged to run front to back like you can in the standard Scamp 5er. My husband is 6'2" and we wanted a little more comfortable bed arrangement for him. Plus we had been watching the Escapes and liked their approach and features. When a used 5.0 (2008) became available we jumped on it (you are right, they don't come up very often) and are having Escape add a few things, like solar, a bathroom window and an escape hatch over the queen bed.

Our Scamp 5er sold in about a month. Most of the serious inquiries came from Craigslist listings (and some wackos too!) The 5er is harder to sell than the tow behind Scamps because you do have to have a buyer who has a small to mid-sized P/U. We had several folks who were very interested but either had a tow vehicle issue or the person had a height issue and then we found a really nice couple in Albuquerque and it was a perfect match. They will get lots of used from it as they are frequent campers.

We won't know if we would do it again until we pick up the Escape and try it out!

Fran & Dave
