5.0 TA weight

I'm guessing a 5.0 is about 5000 fully loaded? looks like the dry weight is 3885 pds and the tongue weight is 600 pounds ? is that correct?

The total weight is approximately 3885 lbs including hitch weight, plus options. You would have to put a lot of stuff in it and load up tanks to he 5000, but no worries, it is rated for 5500 lbs.

Assuming that you're buying a new trailer, that would be a 2017 5.0TA. There was a "5.0", but it has been out of production for a few years, and is substantially lighter.

What do you mean by "fully loaded"? Loaded with every option but none of your stuff yet? Loaded with cabinets full of stuff and enough cast-iron cookware to feed an army?

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum which a trailer is allowed to weigh, including everything you are carrying in it. Escape's 5.0TA page says this is 5500 pounds, and Jim confirmed that.

The 600 pound hitch weight is dry and empty. Fresh water would reduce that a bit, but waste water increases it. Part of the weight of options, propane, and your stuff is carried on the hitch, so it will likely be substantially more than 600 pounds when you are ready to drive.

That's 3885 pounds (dry, base equipment, empty) according to the same Escape specs page. It may be wrong (updates from the previous design to the 2017 design have been spotty), but it will be close.

Most people add options - as much as a few hundred pounds - and then there is water and your stuff. 5000 pounds would allow for lots of options, water, propane, and a few hundred pounds of your stuff.

Trailer Life may have weighed the trailer with full propane and fresh water tanks, but that would be a wet (not dry) weight.

The Cargo Carrying Capacity is calculated based on having the freshwater tank full and wastewater tanks empty, but the published dry weight is... dry, meaning all tanks empty.

Yes I know it's just a guess 5000 being on the heavy end but as I buy my truck I am just making sure I have enough truck I'm sure I'm fine but just wanted to check out my assumptions- no cast iron usually - but you never know. I'm never sure if the posted weights on the web site are the most current. I just put 5.0 because I get tired of adding TA when there is only the one being made now and I'm ordering a 2017.

Kate, I suspect you are trying to figure out what the approximate weight of yours might be.
Mine, loaded with my personal possessions, with two full propane tanks and essentially empty holding tanks weighs 4,400 lbs. The tongue weight is 740 lbs. Those are certified scale weights. I have added a few things since weighing it so I would guess it is around 4,450 lbs at this point in time.

Most any truck you get well have adequate towing capacity if you ensure it has adequate cargo capacity, which is harder to find.

Ok thanks that gives me an idea I was a little heavy for the trailer and light with the tongue weight I don't think I pack heavy just average.

Very little. I've owned both. I get somewhat better mileage with the 2.7, but my 3.5 was pre-10 speed transmission. I would spring for the 10 speed if you choose the 3.5. In any case, get the 35 gallon fuel tank rather than the 26 gallon tank. You shouldn't have a weight capacity problem with either.

Understood, but people are buying used 5.0's and getting tow vehicles for them all the time, so I try to be clear about the distinction in my posts.

Kate, I have in my hand the dealer sticker off the window of my 2014 Ford F-150.
4x4 Supercab
145" wheelbase
3.5L Ecoboost V6 Engine
Electric 6-speed auto w/tow mode
17mpg city
21 highway
7200# GVWR
36 gallon fuel tank

I typically get 16+ towing! I don't speed and Ten Forward isn't heavy (compared to others 5.0TAs). But I'm very, very happy.

My prior 2000 Ford F-150 with the Triton V-8... I got 13 mpg city driving and filled up every 6 business days. GAG

Here's a note from an earlier discussion about the weight reported by Trailer Life:

Cargo Carrying Cap. 1,110 lbs
For these weights it seems that they have either weighed the test trailer (which would be good), or added 40 pounds (propane) and the calculated weight of 28+6 US gallons of water (34x8=272 lb) plus the $3,612 worth of options to the spec dry weight; 3,700+40+272 is too low, so it can't be just dry spec plus fluids.
The 2017 will be a bit heavier, so it you have the same options as this 5.0TA and tow with full fresh water you could carry something less than 600 pounds of stuff, and still stay within 5,000 pounds total.

I agree with Jim's point about difficulty finding a truck with enough cargo capacity (payload) for a 5.0TA and this is important when deciding between the 2.7 and 3.5EB F150. With the people and other cargo we wanted capacity for, I decided on a minimum of 1700 lbs payload and you won't find that in a 2.7 unless it has the heavy duty payload package. If you don't need 1700 lbs you might find a 2.7 with 1600 payload. I've seen 2.7's with heavy duty payload package (4x4 supercrews) with 1900 payload, same as my 3.5EB, but they are harder to find.

Yes. Including any options on the truck its self. Ex. Step rails, grill guard, 5th wheel hitch.

Kate, you gotta get into the fifth wheel lingo, there is no tongue so it is hitch weight (or pin weight).

There is a king pin attached to a pin box. It is this kinda stuff that sets us 5.0TA folks aside from the others. (where the heck is the nose in the air smiley?)

According to the Certificate of Origin on my new 5.0 the shipping weight is 4240lbs and the GVW is 5500lbs.
The 4240 is also on the customs declaration. I would think this would be an accurate number as I will be registering it using these figures. The trailer is equipped with the heavier options, AC, 2 batteries, solar panels and thermal windows. Think this would be a heavy 5.0. I have no idea what pin weight is yet but pretty sure F150 will handle it.
