Andersen WDH now has a white plastic comb/friction collar. The new material of the comb is supposed to eliminate some of the problems encountered before. They will send you one if you contact them.

Andersen WDH

I have been using the Andersen since 2013 on our 21 and we are happy with it. I have worn out 2 of the bushings and this third one is white, maybe it will last longer. I changed this one about a year ago and it may have 10 thousand miles and it looks good. We don't have any chain wear, maybe that has to do with alignment.

Jack, one of my theories is that the chain guides are causing at least half of the squeak noise on low speed turns ie parking lot. With your good chain wear, do you have noise during turning?

On some occasions mine sounds like a banshee.

Dennis at ETI described that sound in referring to a customer who came by with a sleeve material problem, when Anderson changed it in 2015. Could it be that and not the chain causing the noise?

I need to look again at the whole shooting match, but last I looked the "goop" was at most out of the collar by maybe the height of a quarter?

Bruce, do you think you need a w/d with your set up? Have you towed without it and noticed any difference. I drove home with my new 19 from Chilliwack without any w/d set up. I had an Andersen w/d which I sold with my 21.

andersen WDH

I don't have but very little noise of any kind. The bushing shouldn't be up more than a half inch above the aluminum and I do lube the ball every time since the trailer pitches on the ball. I have worn spots on the ball where the pitch motion happens.

Normal sunny day towing, no I don't put it on. For me, the rig tows better with it hooked up during a) twisty mountain road driving or/and b) extreme wind towing. Both of which I seem to encounter during my travels.

Thanks Jack. I have a suspicion that my chain guides/trailer attachment needs adjusting by an expert.

if so, how to prevent?

At least one 21 owner had his Andersen shank stolen as when first installed ETI used a stock pin instead of the owner's locking one. I used to store the rest of it in my front box or rear of the Yukon.

That big hunk of machined bright metal does look inviting to a thief. I secured ours with a locking pin shortly after our first trip. You can see it on the far left here. They could still take the cone and ball assembly I suppose, but they'd better have some very large wrenches.

So what brackets do you guys have based on the attached photo?
I called the manufacturer and the tech told me either #3359 and #3369 (in the middle of photo) universal brackets should work for our 4" frame

I think any of the first three would work, but the 3361 looks like your best bet. They're sized just right for the 21's 4" frame. The 3359 will sit a bit low because they include 2" of extra bracket directed below the frame, affecting ground clearance and breakover angle. I have the 3369 because they were the best fit for the Casita we had last year. They'll work fine on the 21 we're getting this year, and even though they're a couple of inches longer than needed those inches sit above the frame and won't hurt anything.

I ordered the 3324 kit through Tweety's and asked them to substitute the 3369 brackets. The person taking my order immediately said, "Casita?".

Hi Keith,
wouldn't the #3361 be 3/8" too big for our 4" frame?
Thanks

The brackets have a little extra spacing so the top tilts to the rear and the bottom comes forward. The bolts above and below come into firm contact with the frame, creating some tension to prevent things from sliding. The kit includes set screws to keep things even tighter. That's all I did with the Casita, though some folks weld the brackets on to be certain things won't move. The hitch worked great over the 5000 miles I did last year, except for the hideous groaning that developed about halfway through that - even with the newer, white friction cone. Oh the looks and exclamations from frightened pedestrians as I rounded corners, trolling for a place to park in downtown Burlington, Vermont on a crowded Friday night...

Mine are #3359.

Work perfectly on a 4" frame, and installed by Reace.

Kinda hard to see from this photo since it's a crop of a larger one, but they're 3359 based on the graphic above.

Height of the hitch ball?

So I've ordered the WDH from Tweety's. Thanks for everyone's help.
It's going to be here tomorrow.

I thought I'd get a headstart installing the shank and hitch ball. (make sure I can torque to 150 lbs )
Would you guys know approximately how high the top of the hitch ball should be for 2017 21' ? Red Dog helped me by measuring his new 21 from ground to top of leveled frame at 20.5"

Posting reference here for future potential Andersen WDH buyers...
If your receiver height is similar to my Pilot, then you'll have to buy the 4" drop (instead of the 8") to get close to the desired hitchball height. Please see https://andersenhitches.com/uploads/...ide%202015.pdf
for more info.

For me, my hitchball height for 21' (non-high axle) is in between the highest drop position and the lowest rise position... so only the 4" drop/rise shank works
