Any vehicles getting 20 mpg (18 mpg US?) while towing?

Perhaps this post belongs in a different catagory of the forum...

Does anybody have experience with a vehicle (prefer 4 wheel drive and #5000 towing capacity) that achieves 20 plus mpg while towing?

The Ford F150 V6 Ecoboost mentioned in a previous post is Transport Canada rated as 30 mpg highway (empty).
It seems that a lot of tow vehicles drop about 1/3 when towing a light trailer. Theoretically, this would bring the mpg towing in at the magic number.

Any thoughts? Any vehicles coming close to this?

Gord

Re: Any vehicles getting 20 mpg (18 mpg US?) while towing?

There is a post or two in another brand forum where light footed Americans are claiming 17 mpg (Imp) towing a #4200 20 foot Flying Cloud Airstream.

Perhaps towing the lighter, better made Escape trailer will permit 20 mpg (Imp) for those of us forced to drive the posted speed limit.

And, keep in mind that Transport Canada's numbers are even more suspect than the U.S. numbers.

Canada, apparently, is going to be adopting the U.S. standards for measuring mileage.

Currently, it seems that Canada gets the figures by putting one wheel on a treadmill and pouring corn syrup into the gas tank. What ever doesn't fit in the tank goes on their waffles and they subtract one from the other to come up with a number ( waffles per quart? ).

The best I've been able to do is 15MPG (US) towing at 60MPH in the interstates, a bit less on secondary roads.

Re: Any vehicles getting 20 mpg (18 mpg US?) while towing?

We tow a 19' using a 2005 Tacoma that has a 5000# towing capacity. Last summer we did a 2 week trip to Nevada (Speed Week on the Salt Flats). We also toured around Nevada which has many mountain passes to climb over. Keeping an eye on the fuel economy we averaged 17.8 mpg (imp) or 15.9 l/100. On three fill ups where we didn't do passes and stayed mostly on level ground I could get just over 20 mpg. I used the the cruise control while on the flats and made sure to gear down to climb the hills.

Hi: All...I haven't been able to break the 20mpg limit while towing, but I have gotten 19.5 imp.
As for waffles... I prefer maple syrup!!! Corn syrup gives me "Gas". Alf

I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD, which is a diesel, and I get 18 mpg averaged, towing a 17B. I check mileage every fill up and it is always the same +/- .3 mpg. I live in Washington state so lots of different terrain depending on where I go. The max tow rating for this vehicle is 5000 lbs.

I missed the 2006 Liberty CRD run. I was waiting for that model and then decided to wait a year "for the bugs to be worked out". I believe it was emission standards from the Republic of Kalifornia that shut down the Liberty CRD.

I would buy one in a flash if they became available today.

I am actually considering a 2005 Ram 3500 Laramie with the cummins diesel. It "only" has 47k miles and gets 23-24 mpg (Canadian gallons ) I'm towing an equal load called a boat.

How do you like the Liberty CRD? Any major problems since 2006?

I have not had any problems with my CRD and I have no intention of selling or trading. That should answer the question of how do I like it.

We left home on Jan 3, are now in Green Valley, AZ and we averaged 21.84 MPG for the trip.

I have heard the identical comment from every Liberty CRD owner that I have talked to. Too bad the North American auto industry can't get its act together to actually create quality products on a long term basis. This vehicle seems to be one of those bright lights that we are famous for letting petty politicians shut down.

My wife likes the Subaru but we would need the 6 cylinder version. Nicely appointed vehicle but the towing capacity is well under #5000.

Thanks for posting.

Don't forget to check the size of the brakes when considering a tow vehicle.

I towed a tent trailer with a 1987 Subaru ( Legacy? Loyale? I forget ). It had disc brakes the size of the lid off a can of Campbell's soup.

I was a risk to my family and other drivers.

A Toyota Prius RV? Yup!
Would you believe it -- a Toyota Prius camper? Well, believe it! The sleek RV debuted at a Tokyo auto show this weekend. It's got a queen bed, a smaller bed and a bathroom with shower. And, wow, great gas mileage! You want one? Well, read all about it.I saw a Prius-camper Take a look at this Toyota Prius with custom camper modification.

In one of the more bizarre car modifications we have seen, Japanese conversion outfit Campinn has developed this unique and somewhat odd looking camper add-on for the standard Prius.

Campinn’s modified addition gives the current Prius a robust makeover of sorts, adding space for a convertible sofa-bed and overhead sleeping area. The camper addition is made of fiber-reinforced plastic and features a skylight as well as a back door for easy loading and unloading.

I saw this Prius camper on the web at the Tokyo Auto Show.
A new Escape puller.

But can it tow a 17B? In fact, can it tow a child's wagon If I just want maximum mpg and leave the Escape at home, I have a bicycle with a BOB trailer that I have camped with
