Battery Cutoff Switch

Is this a standard item or an option? Where is it located on a 21'? Thanks in advance for your replies.

I believe it is standard on all Escapes. Not sure where it is on a 21, it should be covered during your orientation at ETI when you pick up. But perhaps one of our 21 members can give you a specific location.

Battery disconnect switch

Thanks Carl. I'll be having it delivered due to distance. Right now, I just disconnect the positive lead from the battery to prevent draining battery. A switch will sure be nice.

They're located on the face of the bench near the power station (WFCO) in all Escapes. Of course, the location of the power station varies by model, but its under a dinette bench. And yes, standard.

It is a very small drain, though.
Even though I have solar I have to leave the switch on while home; my 21 lives indoors so no solar drain wanted......

The switch in my 21 is located right next to the converter, street side rear. I installed a safety rocker switch to prevent an accidental turn off. See here http://smile.amazon.com/JT-Products-...e+switch+cover

My dog thought it was a great idea too, so she more or less ate it. Also turned off the switch.

Feed that dog Charlie! On a 5.0TA with u-shape dinette, dual 6 volt batteries, it's on the drivers-side rear bench. Big ole Red Flipper... can't miss it! (unless ETI made a change since I bought Ten Forward.. and that's possible )

Nope. No change. That's where mine is. Unless they've changed since late May.

I think the OP was asking about the 21', but I'm thinkin' it depends on the shape of the dinette, number of batteries and placement of the batteries

I think most people would notice that the door is open on the trailer. I defy any mere mortal to just look at the trailer and see whether or not there is 12 volts of power at one terminal of the breakaway switch. Of course they can see the switch if they look at it, but while an open door is obviously not right for going down the highway, there's nothing obvious about the position of the shutoff switch.

Wiring the breakaway switch to bypass the shutoff switch would avoid having to think about this issue at all ever again. Is that "overthinking"?

Of course there's the alternative of ignoring the whole potential issue, and so maybe not turning the shutoff switch back on until arriving at the first campsite, which means driving without a breakaway feature. No "overthinking"... no thinking at all.

I thought the switch was only standard if you get the twin 6V batteries, but then a year is a long time in an Escapes evolution.

Probably that's how it was (is). Mine didn't come with a battery disconnect. I'd ordered it with the Group 29 battery only. I didn't care because I was installing a marine two battery switch anyway. I wouldn't want a trailer that didn't have a battery disconnect, I've seen what can happen to a car without one that has a short circuit Personally, I'd rather have a setup where "off" meant everything was off.

This is apparently true, but if the purpose of the shutoff switch is to prevent the battery (or batteries) from being run down in storage, it would be even more needed with a single battery installation than with a dual battery installation.

The switch is uncommon on conventional bumper pull trailers, most folks I know that had a switch, added it themselves. The rest just unhook a cable or pull the batteries.

When your talking exterior mounted battery boxes, installing one is pretty simple.

I used to just pull the fuse at the battery. Now I have a switch from ETI but I still pull the fuse when I want the solar panel also cut off.

That's interesting - a master shutoff switch for the coach battery is normal in a motorhome, and it's functionally the same situation. I think ease of access to the batteries (usually easy on a trailer tongue and not so easy in a motorhome compartment) is the difference: if the switch is easy to install, it's also easy to just pull off a cable.

Do Escapes come with the shutoff as standard equipment when the battery or batteries are inside, but not when they're on the tongue or bumper? That's not quite the same as single versus dual, but perhaps close.
