Thanks for posting this "rookie" issue. We have had issues like this also. Be careful when you are camping at an uneven site and unhook. Getting reconnected when the trailer and tug are uneven can be an issue.

Okay, then what is the lever? I'm missing something here as the OP mentions a lever and a boot. Maybe I didn't get enough sleep last night.

Yoke style coupler

The lever is on top where the hitch pin goes and the front strap is shown in the down position. Evidently Greg didn't pull the lever back to lift the strap which releases the pawl.

He means the yoke - as Ross mentioned. He lifted the latch, but didn't pull back to lift the yoke.

EDIT: Oops, beat me Ross.

Making me miss my Bulldog coupler I added on my Scamp. One of the nicest couplers I ever encountered. May be a future mod....

I find that spaying the pins by the yoke with silicone is important with hooking up and unhooking. And always wear a glove before hitting the latch to avoid bruising the palm.

With our Casita I occasionally had to do this.

Not sure why I think that.

Not sure what your tug is, but for anyone -

Be careful about standing on a car or SUV bumper, though. They are often not designed for weight that direction.

I would stand on trailer frame near front.

Hi: Losangeles "Giving it some English" probably means "Attitude" adjustment. Alf

The little boot (the yoke) with the two teeth jams on mine all the time so I carry one of those pry bars that look like a bent screwdriver with me. It's about 10 inches long.
I pry up on the front of the curved piece of metal we a calling a boot with this screwdriver type thing. It is just stiffer than my hand.

I find shifting the tow vehicle much easier than brute strength.

Thanks, Ross and Robert. Terminology, terminology. I just call the whole kit-and-kaboodle thingy...The Hitch.

Edited: I find it reassuring that others have problems, too. I don't have the strength or the weight to do some of these maneuvers and have occasionally been almost reduced to tears when trying to hitch up in my sloped driveway.

But that thingy on the front of the trailer is the coupler. Calling it "The Hitch" just confuses people who are trying to help, and will likely think you're talking about parts attached to the tug, not the trailer. It's okay that most people don't understand the technical details, but it's worth finding the right term to make constructive communication possible. Pictures help - like Robert provided.

Unless what you're trying to move is not supposed to move, in which case you're just damaging the equipment. In decades of working on my own vehicles and with friends, I've found that the "BFH" (and yes, I have some ) is occasionally needed, but not often.

Hey Greg&Teresa,
We are only an hour or so away if you guys need help this weekend. We would love to drive down to check out the campground since we have not camped there before and see the new 19'. Let us know; we don't want to intrude.

Keeps them from producing unwanted baby pins too.

I realize that you did not lift the yoke, however, before hitching up, (if you did not) you can use a thin film of lithium grease on the hitch ball, then wipe off when unhitched.

Congratulations on the new Escape! May you have many exciting trips.
