Carbon monoxide problem in the Ford Explorer?

For those driving and towing with an Explorer, I saw this article about the SUV making drivers sick:

I'd heard about it in the Police Interceptor models but not the civilian one. The cop model is frequently used at full throttle, most of the time just to break up the boredom.

I believe at one time Ford was blaming all the holes drilled in the police model bodies to add lights and various other law enforcement electronics. But after they "solved" the problem, the problem kept recurring - again only in the police models. So I'm not sure where that is at now.
