Dear Lord, another towing thread....

That works - for rational and sensible people. Unfortunately there is always a cadre that chooses to completely ignore such numbers, then encourages the newbies to do the same.

Good idea. I love good poutine, but you sure are not going to find that at DQ.

Both routinely make statements which are not founded in reality. Fortunately, there is a zone of intelligent evaluation in between.
This is very true. While the first statement may be more prevalent on the FGRV site, the latter has been often touted here. I find a lot of it comes down to owners wanting to justify their own choice, in both cases.

I have seen a few light pickups towing monstrous trailers, and obviously are way under power, and lack adequate suspension. A combination more deadly than a small SUV towing a 2.00 lb trailer.

Knowing these numbers up front would be a great thing, but most of the stickies are rarely read, and the more posted, the less likely this would be. And to be fair, there are a lot of people that don't have a clue on what these numbers mean, or how to find them.

The bottom line is to do as baglo suggested, and just disregard the thread. Folks really should not be bothered by it.

There are lots of topics here that go on and on too, then get repeated in a new thread once again a while later. It seems this is just human nature, and we all do what comes naturally differently.

There is a sticky in the same forum section as this topic:
Understanding RV weight terms
but it is not as clear as would be ideal.

Anytime some asks a tow rating question refer them to the sticky, complete the questionnaire and then come back with their questions.
There are various online calculators, and I did post a link to a spreadsheet that people can use with their own numbers in Towing a travel trailer weight calculator (mine is in post #11). There was very little interest expressed in my spreadsheet; perhaps someone else could contribute one that suits more members.

Our advice we always give at Scamp Owners International is that we never recommend you tow over your stated vehicle limits and if something happens it wouldn't be surprising if your insurance voids any claims. Most everyone forgets about the insurance part when they argue that they can tow a Scamp with a motorcycle. :-)

Someone would simply refer you to the sticky as they do all of the time for Trailer Weights In the Real World. The OPs are asking a question that they need to ask. At least they are asking, which is good. Giving them good info would be better than "I towed my xxx with an xxx for xxx years (overweight) and no problem!" A sticky should have the definitions and an example for GCWR and the rest. Nothing difficult about it but it needs an explanation.

"Pristine" would be an even better way of putting it.
