Extended towing mirrors

We'll be getting our 15' next January. Does anyone have any recommendations for clip-on extension mirrors. With the width of the trailer at 6' 8" I'm sure we're going to need them. Thanks in advance for any replys!

Re: Extended towing mirrors

We towed our Casita (which was also 6'8" wide) with the standard mirrors on our Ford Ranger and had adequate visibility. If you do need them, do a bit of research before your purchase as some of the add-on mirrors are notorious for vibrating.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

We have also pulled a 17' Casita and now a great 19' Escape with a Toyota Highlander and do not need any mirror extension.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

Here are the ones we use:

http://www.amazon.com/CIPA-11960-Uni...4063690&sr=8-1

If they are properly adjusted they don't vibrate, remove easily. They are a bit tricky to get properly adjusted for good vision, since they are clamped to the rounded body of the rear-view mirrors on your vehicle. You need to mark which one is for the left and which for the right side.

We are happy with them.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

After trying to go without extended mirrors for a while, I bought these clip-on towing mirrors. I do not love them - they are unattractive. But they are functional and give me much better awareness of what is going on around me. I will not tow without them.

The shock wave from passing oncoming trucks can blow my driver's-side mirror flat. Nasty surprise at first, but you get used to it. And drive a little closer to the shoulder.

I have seen them in many auto parts and hitch stores. Canadian tire stocks them, as does Camping World. Any parts store can get them in within a day.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

I have Tow 'N See mirrors. They attach to your factory mirrors via suction cups. They stay on even at high speed, unless the mirror was dirty or you didn't put them on properly.

http://www.tow-n-see.com/

I'm happy with how easy to install and remove and to store. They come in regular and convex. I have regular.

I like the extension because, although I can see past the trailer with my RAV4 mirror, I can't see as far back down the road. If somebody is overtaking you at speed, that can be an issue.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

We just returned from our first trip of the year. We used, for the first time, extended towing mirrors purchased from Canadian Tire. Seem similar to the ones shown by Ron but ours have ratchets for easier tightening. We won't drive without them again.

Those are really neat, look great, and easy! Good find.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

Glenn, how heavy are they. My concern is the stress they would put on the adjusting mechanism on the vehicle mirror. It does not take much pressure to move them around on vehicles with electronic adjusting. One reviewer on Amazon claims they bounce around quite a bit, though vibration is a concern when mounting on lots of mirrors.

I really like how easily they mount.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

We use the clip on mirrors similar to Ron's. They are better than nothing but I am not a big fan of them & had been considering trying something else. The Tow 'N See mirror's simplicity is very appealing but I read the same reviews as Jim. Glad to hear that they are working well for Glenn. I might give them a try.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

Tow 'N See mirror is very light.
As for vibration, it's not been an issue for me. However, anything sticking out like that is likely to vibrate some at speed.

I should add that I am comfortable with the driver side extension, but am having more difficulty getting used to using the extension on the off-side. My eye just doesn't naturally go to that mirror.

It vibrates when you go over 80mph Jim! Baglo has said repeatedly that he drives a little more sanely these days (preparing for retirement slowdown I suppose).
I have that same problem Glenn. On my left side, the mirror works good, but when my eye goes to the right, it gets stuck on my beautiful wife sitting there beside me, and just won't go to that mirror either. Try it sometime when the "Ole Bag" isn't in the car, and see if it works better : - )

Re: Extended towing mirrors

I use the McKesh mirrors from Hensley. They are, as a friend once said, spendy, around $150 to $200, but, they provide great visibility, are rock solid with no vibration, and are easy to put on and take off.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

Is the 5.0 narrower than the other trailers?

edit: I forgot, Escape did make the 19 wider I believe.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

Yes the 19' is wider than the other Escapes. I have the CIPA mirrors that Brian has as well, and they did serve me very well on the way home from SSM Ontario. I actually am able to look a little behind Cafe Egg with them. They are easy to put on.

Re: Extended towing mirrors

Thanks for the all the replies. I think we'll try the Tow n See and see how they work, since it will not take a major investment to do so . . .
I like that they offer flat as well as convex mirrors. . .

By the way we have 9 months before we get our Escape. Feels like we're going through a pregnancy . . . And no we don't have a name yet . . .

Re: Extended towing mirrors

We just ordered towing mirrors that I haven't seen before on this forum--Aero 2 Towing Mirrors by Milenco.

http://www.amazon.com/JR-Products-AE...8245809&sr=8-1

We like the fact that they can clamp to the bottom of our car mirrors (see second link) because for us that means no risk of abraded paint on the mirror housing. We'll let you know how they work out.
