Come to Canada with that 36 gallon tank and you'll need a line of credit.

You said it. Current prices here equal about .96 CAD/L. That's actually pretty high for us, with gas prices climbing over 40 cents per gallon in the last several weeks.

My problem isn't the weight of the trailer (4600 lbs) but the payload of the Taco (still had a well over 1000 lbs of extra tow capacity). It was OK for the 17, and just within payload limits, and while it pulls the 21 OK, I get tired of running at 4000 RPM in 3rd gear. With the increased tongue weight of the 21 (500 lbs) and the junk I insist on carrying on my 9 - 10 month trips, I'm at least 150 lbs over the payload on the truck. Also over on the rear axle...

As to MPG, I was getting 14 towing the 17, but between 10 - 12 towing the 21.

Depending on your powertrain and a few other factors of course, you can expect that to climb to the 15.5 - 16 mpg range while towing.

And kiss the low gear/high RPMs to keep speed goodbye. Very happy for you Jon, you're gonna love this truck.

Jon, I may have missed it, but which engine did you decide on for your new F-150? I hope we're neighbors again at next year's Green Eggs & Ham Rally so I can come check it out! Dale

re the earlier bit about tow mirrors.... ford truck mirrors are interchangable across a wide range of years... I have a 2002 F250 diesel longbed, and am quite tempted to get some 2008+ mirrors, as their 'blind spot' wide angle lower mirror is quite a bit larger than what I have stock.

mine look like this first attachment,
and the 2008-2013 ones look like the second, bolt right up to my truck and plug in.

hahahaha, I put 35.3 gallons (133.6 l) in my 38 gallon tank today. $125 fillup, yikes.

otoh, I went 500 miles on that tank, in the mountains, plus a bunch of stop and go memorial day weekend traffic, pulling the 21 with a full load of gear and stuff.

Hi Jon, congrats on your new truck. What’s the payload on this truck? Hope you have good luck with it.

3.5 EcoBoost. As to payload, I won't have exactly until I see the sticker on the door, but the specifications show 2150 lbs.

Those new F150's with the 3.5EB engine are torque and tow monsters! They will tow anything Escape offers with change to spare!

All of that's true John, but when you're talking about the new trucks, it gets tricky depending on how they're equipped. If the truck is equipped with BLIS for example, the mirrors would need to be equipped for BLIS, power adjust, and power fold. In the case of the trailer tow mirrors with BLIS, as in my truck, you have to add power telescope to that. These particular mirrors also have LED marker lamps and pool lighting. The only source is factory to have all that, not just because of the mirrors, but because of the interior controls.

If you're just trying to get extended mirrors and don't have those other features, then yes, lots of them will work.

Jon,
I'll be interested in knowing how your 3.5 tows. We'll be taking delivery of our 21 on the 26th and we'll pull with our '18 F150 with 2.7. The dealer said that with 400 ft. lbs. of torque at 2700 RPM, it would handle it well. That 10 speed is as smooth as silk.

My guess is you'll love the combination Marv. Had the 2015, recently traded it in for the 2018 with the redesigned 2.7L and the 10 speed. Nice truck.

I don't think you can go wrong with either the 2.7 or the 3.5. Both do a fine job with any Escape. I've gone with the 2.7L twice now only because of the slightly better gas mileage.

For Pack Rats Bigger = Better

Weighed our 21 for the first time; had done so twice ir more for the 17. Was shocked to see 4500 even! Weighed the Yukon- it was 7140....normal curb weight spec is 5300. So now I don't wonder anymore why the MPG is 12 instead of 13. Next time I will unhook and weigh the Yukon to determine tongue weight.

Sorry Jon had to sell an almost new truck like we did when moving from the 17 as well, yet I was already wary if 4000 RPM driving going in/out of Death Valley in the 17 inside of the six months we owned the Highlander.

McKesh Mirrors

I used these for years with car trailers. On and off easy, great vision and no noise. Don’t know if they’re still made but you can find used ones....

You won't have any problem. I just pulled my 2012 5.0 (3900lbs) up the 97C out of Kelowna BC with my 2017 F150, 2.7, 6 speed transmission, 3.75 rear axle and tow package. Part of it includes a 26km (16+ mile) constant upgrade at 6.5% grade with no relief at all. Went up at 60 mph in 4th at 2700 rpm with power to spare. I actually found myself having to take my foot off the gas a couple of times to keep my speed at 60. The transmission went from a normal of 92C (198F) to 97C (207F). I did reset the fuel usage gauge at the beginning of the assent and it was reading 28.5 litres per 100 km (10 mpg Imp) for the ride up but this evened out to 14.1 litres per 100km (20 mpg Imp) by the time I was down the other side.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/dr...de-profile.pdf

We were recently down in Utah and went up to 9600 ft with no problems at all though the grades weren't as long and constant as the 97C. For that 8,000km trip we averaged 13.4 litres per 100km (21mpg Imp)

Just saw this thread, was traveling to pick up my son's stickie in IN on May 29.

Gas just south of us in Pembina works out to $1.00 Cdn per litre much better than the 1.22 in Winnipeg. I'm sure Jon and others coming from the US to the Boler 50th will all be stopping to get gas in Pembina (and shop at the duty free).

Congratulations Jon on the purchase of your F150, looking forward to seeing it in Winnipeg.

It's hard to find any truck equipped with them on a dealer lot, let alone to find a truck that's equipped the way you like - that's the main reason we ordered a truck.

As for them being an obstacle when parked, I just power fold them in. No issue.
