If you haven't already, just try Googling "inside the bed truck toolbox". Lots of options out there.

Check out the Fold-a-Cover G4 Elite with a Personal Caddy.
Fold-a-Cover Tonneau Covers | A Division of Steffens Automotive

The caddy is great that it hangs on the box edge and the bottom is about 6" off the bed, so I can stow long things with the end under it. Plus the front section of the cover doubles as the lid for it.

I did a TON of research before I bought, and am pleased with what I got. There are other good covers out there, but this one seemed to fit my needs best. One thing I am very impressed with is that I get virtually no water under it. All the tools in the caddy have remained dry. It was quite easy to install, and is easy to use.

You can open the tailgate with it closed. There were a couple brands that could not accomodate ths.

I like that it works great in place with the fifth wheel connection, yet can be removed in fairly short order if desired.

I have not used any other tonneau cover, having always had a topper of some sort, so this is the only one I have put to use.

Jim,

Can the tool box be accessed with a fifth wheel hooked up?

Thanks!

Yes it can. You just fold the other sections back to form a ^ shape behind the front one, but ahead of the pin box. Good thing too, because I have had need to do that a few times.

Whoa!!! I just saw the price on the tool box. $507 (US). Can't say I've ever bought one but that seems pretty pricey? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

That tote won't work for me. It is held above the bed of the pickup and one of the things I want to put in the box like a floor jack and a Honda 2000 generator would pound the suspended box. The folding cover is nice. I have found that the aluminum diamond plate tool boxes that sit flat on the bed cost $450-500 usd.

It is pricey. I first looked for other options, but ended up going with the Fold-a-Cover one as it fits perfect, and with the front section of the cover doubling as the lid, it kept using it simple. Other solutions had too many comprises.

I am 6' even, and do use a two step ladder to access the bottom of the caddy with my Ford F 150.

It actually sits flush with the top of the bed rails.

Just curious, what do you use a floor jack for when camping?

One thing that you can't do with this cover is to access the caddy when standing in the bed very well.

I've been carrying the floor jack in case I need it for the tow vehicle or the trailer. Haven't needed it yet. I rarely use the generator either.

I'd suggest a bottle jack or something lighter and less bulky to take along Steve. I don't know about your floor jack, but mine is very heavy and bulky to be taking along when I'm camping.

Hi: rbryan4... The only floor that needs a jack is the one in a casino... cause it always slants towards the house!!! Alf

How does a floor jack work on a slope? Mine has no brakes, that I know of.

The useful payload isn't reduced by any meaningful amount unless you fill it, since the difference in the weight of the tank itself is minimal. I would certainly want to have the option to carry fuel or cargo (and would not have to choose with the payload package anyway), so I wouldn't pass up the larger tank for weight reasons.
Hi - I went to a Ford dealership yesterday and checked the payload figures on a SuperCab 4x4 with the extended range fuel tank. The payload was 1575 lbs. I'm not sure how other options may have affected the payload, but the extended range tank (with fuel) didn't have a huge impact. At least the payload was still acceptable for my purposes.
I almost purchased one of the SuperCabs, but had enough doubt about the size of the rear seat area that I thought I'd better get that straightened out first.
My choices seem to be:

1) for best fuel economy, truck length and 5th wheel compatibility, the 2.7L SuperCab seems to fit the bill and fit in my garage (barely).

2) for best fuel economy, truck length and passenger comfort/storage space, but 5th wheel compatibility issues (i.e. the short bed), the 2.7L SuperCrew short bed would work and fit in my garage.

3) for sacrificed fuel economy, longer truck length (i.e. won't fit in my garage), but overall passenger/storage space and 5th wheel compatibility, the 3.5L SuperCrew 6.5' bed could be an answer. I would need to keep it parked in the driveway. The cost of this unit also becomes a consideration.

I'm sure others have struggled with this and each probably have their own answers. Any input would be appreciated, of course.
Thanks,
John

John, if the longer bed truck will fit in your garage, I'd go with that vs the short bed if I was going to tow a 5.0TA. You won't have issues with cab clearance or turning radius.

Plus you'd have room to fit something in it besides the trailer.

After a cross-country trip the trailer's tires were ready for a rotation. The Scissor Jack for our Explorer worked like a charm. Placed on the frame between the two axles, both tires were off the ground. I was able to work the spare tire in with only two lifts.

Thanks to everyone for their help!

Well, after waiting almost five months since my initial order, I finally took delivery of my special-order F150 last week. I really appreciate everyone's suggestions and thoughts and took most of them into my final build. Just to close the loop, here's what I ended up with:

* Lariat SC 4x4 w/6.5 bed
* 3.5EB 10-speed auto
* 3.55 locking rear end
* Tow package (no payload package available per dealer)
* Power folding/retracting mirrors
* Tailgate & side steps ()
* Voice-activated navigation
* Fold-a-Cover tonneau

Off to Chilliwack this weekend to finalize and drop off our build sheet and pick out some flooring from Pioneer Building Supply (and staying at Harrison Hot Springs to celebrate our 30th anniversary).

Likely declaring bankruptcy soon as I get home ...

Thank you

Thank you for following up on your purchase. If possible can you share a picture of the yellow sticker on the inside driver side door.
