I have a 2007 FJ and was wondering if towing the Escape 19 is pushing the limit on the FJ's towing capabilities? Or should I consider the escape 17?

It's the weight distributing hitch, transfers some of the weight to the front wheels. I use the Pro Series supplied by ETI I think it is $350. They install and set it up for you when you pick up the trailer.

I had a 17B and got away without a WDH with the FJ, but I think you need it for the 19.

Also, the FJ is good for 5000lbs, and I think a loaded 19 is around 3500 so you are fine with the FJ

I had a 2012 FJ and towed my Escape 19, I had to use a weight distribution hitch also as the rear dropped 2" and my head lights were too high. I think the FJ's motor and trans and frame can handle the towing but the suspension in the rear is too soft. Air bags is an alternative also.

I love it. I liked the 17B enough, but the little bit more room is nice and tons of storage space if you need it. Main reason we moved up was so we didn't need to make the bed back into the dinette every morning we are lazy that way. I find it easier to back up the 19 than the 17 but that all comes with practice anyway. I don't think you can go wrong with either trailer.

Also Jim, if you go with the 19 make sure you get the power tongue jack. Makes the WDH much easier to hook up and unhook. I did without it on the 17 but wouldn't give it up on the 19.

I have been towing my 19' with my 2011 FJ since we picked up our Escape from ETI in April 2013. The FJ is quite capable towing the 19' Escape trailer. However, I personally would not want to tow the heavier, wider 21' with the FJ. I have also used a WDH for towing the 19' right from day 1, and have had a pretty good towing experience overall. Have towed through the mountains of Alberta, BC, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Arizona with no big issues. The FJ has a built in transmission cooler, but if you tow a lot in very hot temperatures or on long steep grades, it may be a good idea to go with a secondary transmission cooler. I use a Scan Gage for monitoring transmission fluid temperatures.
