Good News/Bad News 2013 RAV4

Saw photos of the 2013 RAV4 today. The good news? The rear door open up rather than side to side & a 6 speed transmission! Then, there is the bad news - No more V6. While there is a 4 cylinder diesel in some countries, none for the US. I suspect the tow capacity will take a hit. Story at USA Today.

I guess if I ever replace this thing, I'll have to get the Tacoma that I wanted in the first place, or move up to 4-Runner or such.
I'll be expressing my displeasure to my dealer.
I wonder if they had too many problems with the vehicle being over-powered. I got mine through a friend who managed a Toyota dealership and he said he had a lot of people opt for the four cylinder because the V6 scared them, it was so quick.

This has to end sometime. Nissan and Ford too have some nice smaller diesel offerings, though not available in North America. The new Ford Ranger has two different diesel offerings, but according to Ford they won't be offering it here as it competes with the F150.

I know what you mean - My 1969 Camero SS only had 39 more horsepower, and probably weighed 1000 lbs more. Until I got the RAV4 I thought the Camero was a muscle car!

Think I'll be keeping mine for a while. Has 49,500 kilometers on it ( just over 30,000 miles ).

It is stunning that the car company's insist that the north american market doesn't want smaller vehicles with diesel engines, I guess thats why vw has such a problem selling their diesels and the re-sale is so bad on them. I was pretty excited when Gm was designing a baby dmax for the 1/2 pick up and the yukon/tahoe but sadly it got axed during the bankrupcy stuff.

John,
Look at a FJ Cruiser, CPH has approved it as a tow rig for Escape.

Hi: All... I believe that the death of the diesel in N.A. is due in no small part to California's stringent EPA reg's. VW had to rework their engine to pass the Cal. test and it wasn't avail for one model year. I don't think everyone else is that interested to do the same. Alf

EPA requirements could also be at work in dropping the V6 for the RAV. Cuts their overall emissions.

Hi: gbaglo...Yepper. It's not that Toy. doesn't want to build Rav's with V6's. Their CAFE (Corp. Avg. Fuel Economy) numbers will be to high. The tighter the reg's. number game gets the harder it will be to find a good all round tow vehicle. Alf

Do the regs still exempt pickup trucks?

Speaking of gas, I have to buy a new furnace for the house. It's not nearly as much fun as buying a truck or a trailer.

Hi gbaglo... Agreed!!! We bought a Trane Hi Efficiency furnace before they were taken over by American Standard. It has already paid for itself in gas savings. Our budget billing went from $160X10 mos. to $75. Wish I could do that with a "Tug"!!! Alf

I am not certain on the exact details but I do know that the standards for light duty diesel trucks has changed alot thus why we have DEF fluid in the newer diesels and particulate filters in the exhaust. All to reduce emissions from the tail pipe. I can't remember if they count towards the cafe rating though.

Heck that's not even broke in yet.you might consider trading it in at about 200k. It's a keeper. The last Toyota I traded up had 240,000k and was 13 years old. I still got $6,200 for it. But it had a timing belt that need changed every 100k. that was a drag. The Tacoma I got has a chain it's a 06 and just turned 100k. Will trade it up after our Yukon trip next June. A year before retirement.
