The Bolt system looks slick, but when it (or another similar brand) appeared it was basically for pickup truck owners... or those whose key happens to match a truck from the same manufacturer. For instance, I checked for my Sienna and it was not covered, only Toyota trucks. Their website even says "Insert truck key" for the first step of their description of how it works. Have a Honda? Not for you! Apparently, only truck owners have stuff which needs to be locked... (and a Ridgeline doesn't count ).

Strangely, the Bolt FAQ describes all sorts of non-vehicle uses for non-truck owners, and never considers the possibility that someone might want to use them on a trailer towed by anything other than a truck or SUV.

Fortunately, the coverage seems to be better now and my Sienna is included (although my non-towing Mazda3 is still not). For those who have discarded the idea before due to availability it may be worth checking again.

If one is willing to install a whole latch with handle (not just a lock cylinder), the Bolt toolbox latch retrofit kit might work for an Escape outside storage compartment access door. This product does not appear to be listed by eTrailer.

The Jeep spare tire lock might even work with an Escape's alloy wheels; it has the right thread. I can't see worrying about wheel theft, but if locking a wheel onto the trailer is part of a trailer theft prevention scheme, this might be useful.
