That's an entirely reasonable question.

Commercial truck scales (such as CAT Scales) are popular, and found at some trucks stops around here, but I've never used one.
The highway truck scales - run by the provincial governments primarily for enforcement of load limits of commercial vehicles - are free in Alberta and British Columbia. I use them, especially off-hours when they are not attended, but are left operating.
We have lots of RV dealers here, but I haven't heard of one having a scale. Perhaps they do in other areas.

Thank you, Brian. We have lots of truck scales, but I have never seen a travel trailer in line to get weighed. Maybe, since I've never owned a travel trailer, I just never noticed.

There is a commercial scale at the truck stop right beside ETI in Chilliwack. I've not used it but Reace would know the ropes.
I wouldn't want to incur the wrath of truckers by lining up with them at an open scale.

And Add this: Using engine braking is good but this is something to be aware of if you do not have a gauge check out your options for getting one to read tranny temp.

We cannot use government scales in our region for the most part, not that they might not let us in in some case but they are not there for us and generally would not let us in, apparently. Have to go to Flying J or some commercial truck stop like that. In that case, we are paying our money just as they are. We, however, have never had any trucker waiting as we go in off hours.

In contrast, when I called about using Alberta scales and any possible cost, the answer was "you've already paid for it with your taxes".

Still, I only use them in off hours. Even if the truck drivers wouldn't mind one more vehicle in line, sometimes I want to take multiple passes (with and without trailer, or check left versus right side), and I wouldn't do that with anyone waiting.

Automatic Transmission Temperature Chart - See how fast high heat can ruin your transmission.
Temperature certainly matters to transmission fluid, but I can't see why the transmission would care whether I am engine braking or driving, and engine speeds and power transmitted while going down the hill are less than those while going up the hill. Unlike the brakes, the transmission is not absorbing the energy dissipated.

I only raised the question as to where to get weighed because so many people seem to know their trailer weight and their tongue weight. How do you determine your tongue weight? I guess another stupid question, but I really have no clue how to determine it.

One method is to weigh each axle of your trailer and tow vehicle as attached for towing, and then weigh the tow vehicle axles without the trailer attached. It is then a simple calculation to obtain the hitch weight.

You could also use a device such as the Sherline scale for measuring the hitch weight. There are several others on this forum who use this method.

Finally, others have used bathroom scales or other scales to measure their hitch weight.

There are several previous threads on this forum and on Fiberglass RV forum where this has been discussed.
