Spec's say 7600 towing and 1600 payload, not too bad for an open air truck.

Love the jeep product of course and it is good to see it expanding.
Maybe 10 years down the road when all the bugs are worked out we will be looking at one of these... https://youtu.be/y4Oh2ywhWCk
This was just displayed to the public along with the SUV.

Jeep lost its mind when it turned the Wrangler into a Mall Terrain 4-door.

How did it do that? The Wrangler is still a beam-axle body-on-frame 4X4, and still comes as a 2-door or a 4-door. The pickup version is only 4-door, but that's what people buy.

Wow! 4+ trailers + new Mustang in 4 years and probably a new Jeep truck asap. My mom-in-law was probably right that I should get a govt. job

So Jim, why? It would certainly work as a tow vehicle, but so do a lot of other vehicles, so what is the appeal of this one... off-road use? removable roof? appearance/image?
Then there's the big question: gasoline, or wait for the diesel?

You never heard of trade in value, it is the same money being rolled over. Very little out of pocket, besides some spend in their retirement, while some complain about not spending.

Jeeps
Hi Jim
I’ve never owned a Jeep vehicle personally. I’ve had some exciting experiences with them though. And I pulled one out of a ditch once with my 78 big Bronco. While some may be perplexed or question why Jeep has changed over the years it’s apparent to me that they are pretty savvy when it comes to keeping up with the market. Chevrolet, dropping lines and closing factories due to low sales of products might take a page out of the Jeep songbook and figure out who is spending the money. I see consulting in your future. We pimped the guy in the ditch a little when we pulled him out of the snow bank with the Ford. We were dressed for cold weather, in a good mood and glad to help. We had no intention of charging him to help him. My friend said to him “ I thought that Jeep wrote the book on four wheel drive” which at the time was a Jeep advertising slogan. I said “ they did but now they sell them to people who can’t read.” Then we pulled him out. He did say thanks and tried to pay us but we’d had our fun. Of course my motto is “ if you haven’t been stuck, you’ve never done much driving in the country, and I have been stuck and pulled out, mostly by tractors. Good luck with Jeep shopping.

Jim , if I may ask Where did those #s (payload / towing ) come from ?
I am hoping the specs are with options and not for a stripped down version only used in the ad wars

Here's a paragraph from a site called autoblog. Might not get any better then ads for the time being. They compare it to a Ranger!
"On the subject of capability, the Gladiator has some impressive towing and payload numbers. Maximum towing capacity is 7,650 pounds. That's 150 pounds more than the next best gas-powered truck in this segment, the Ford Ranger. Maximum payload capacity is 1,600 pounds, which isn't the highest in the segment, but falls right in the range of the Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado gas models. The bed is 5 feet long and is made of steel with an aluminum tailgate. It has various tie-down points and power outlets. Regarding the towing and payload numbers, it should be noted that the top towing capacity is only available on a Sport trim with the 3.6-liter V6, eight-speed automatic and 4.10 final drive ratio. For the maximum payload, you need a Sport trim Gladiator with 3.6-liter engine, six-speed manual and 3.73 final drive ratio."

They're in the Jeep material, including the splash on their website. They showed up in "leaked" material, but are now openly published by Jeep.

Of course, they are for the optimal variants (that's why it says "maximum" for each). Since there is no online build tool available yet, it's hard to say what equipment is likely to be optional and so will take away from those limits.
There is initially only one engine offered; towing capacity (and probably payload) with the diesel will be lower, and it looks like the 2.0L turbo 4 which is available in the Wrangler won't be offered in the pickup version (Gladiator).

I guess they were thinking they would sell a bunch more jeeps. Sales of the Wrangler easily doubled when they launched the 4-door.
My current Mall Terrain rubicon is objectively better in nearly every way than my YJ of 20 years ago. Better articulation with the coil spring setup, stronger frame, stronger axles, better transfer case without the slip yoke, lower gearing, factory locking differentials, and an electric sway-bar disconnect.
I do miss the tight turning radius of the 2-door though. I would have preferred a 2-door in the current model but the 4-door is much more practical with a family.
P.S. For those seriously considering the Gladiator, you should be aware that the convertible top could leak. Maybe the new models will finally have this sorted out, but every wrangler I've owned has leaked a bit, including my current one.

My old Jeep CJ7 had drain plugs in the floor and I had to use them. I presume modern Jeeps still do.
