When we went into Canada to pick up we handed over the passports and the dog's vaccination papers, and when the agent handed them back there was a treat for Baxter in her hand.

crossing the border
When we crossed into Canada last time, we had the full Jeep to outfit the 21. The Canadian woman just looked at the pass ports, handed them back and said I see you just renewed these, before crossing back into the states we should sign them. That's all, I guess we look harmless.

For those who have a permit to carry, they will know when they check your license and then they will grill you about the reason you have such, just to make sure you are not carrying.

Interesting Jim. I was scolded by an Alaska ranger once for hiking in the woods without carrying a large caliber gun of some sort. How does one drive to Alaska with a weapon?

I often wondered about that. We took three long guns into Ontario in 2010 as we were hunting bear near Horne Payne and had no hassle whatsoever. Just paid the fee, did not even inspect the cases. Handguns are a whole different world and I have no desire to attempt breaking the rules. I even made sure they knew I did not have any spuds which were verboten at the time. Bought my spuds And whiskey in White River, the home of Winnie the Pooh.

Hi Rob- just a friendly reminder with all the excitement: check your jacknife points. A friend from last year's Rally dinged his Dakota on his 19. I have a small star in a rear tail light lens.
Have a great time in your new Escape!

There are a pile of "reality" shows about border crossing operations. The common theme seems to be that if you just do basic research about what you can take across the border, then honestly answer all the questions (which means declaring what you have in any category they ask about), there are few problems. Americans routinely take rifles and shotguns through Canada as they visit Canada for hunting or pass through traveling between Alaska and the lower 48 states.
Having no permanent plate draws attention, but as Robert just demonstrated it's not a problem when you are not trying to get away with anything.

The border facilities that I have seen normally look at the rear plate (although they may look at the front plate as well), because many provinces and states do not issue front plates. They should be able to look up the trailer plate as easily as the tug plate, giving them an idea of who should be at the wheel; of course, there are states which don't require trailer plates, which must complicate things.
The automated tolling systems on some toll roads and bridges read license plates, and they typically have cameras looking at both ends of the vehicle as well... although for one direction on one bridge in B.C. it seems that the rear plate camera wasn't working so I had a couple of free crossings in our Alberta-registered van... with B.C. vehicles having a front plate, I suppose it wasn't urgent for them to fix it.

I purchased my F-150 on April 16. No permanent plates, just the temp offered by the State of Oregon. My insurance agent strongly suggested I not leave the USA without permanent plates. She was concerned about theft of my truck outside the USA. I listened to her and rented a car to cross into Canada less than 10 days later. YMMV

It's official - Tow is On The Way
Howdy all. Can't say enough about how grateful we are for the well wishes. I'm going to start another thread called Past Tents First Journey or something like that since this was about the truck and the saga of getting it. Stay tuned.

Robert and his wife were safely ensconced at Bayview last night. I know--I drove down to see Past Tents and it's a beauty!

Thank you so much for your visit and your kindness Karen! Yolanda says you're a very nice person and she's a good judge of that!

Robert and Yolanda, welcome to Washington, again. Too bad the weather isn't cooperating but it will make your stay at Bayview "memorable". I'd hoped to swing by too and see Past Tents but Gonzo th' Dawg came down with canine pneumonia so we're housebound for now.
Have a fun and safe trip the rest of the way home and I'll be looking for the Past Tents thread.
