It's official - Tow is On The Way

Spent all day looking for my dream TV in the Austin area today. I hate going up I-35 (traffic!...ugh!) but it was worth the trip. My new Tow is a 2015 F150, 2.7L Ecoboost V6, Crew Cab, Lariat trim 4 X 2. It wasn't in stock (try finding anything in stock with the 2.7L Ecoboost) but it will be here just in time for us to take delivery and head out for Chilliwack on March 15th. One more hurdle overcome! So excited.

I think you're the first one to tow with a 2.7EB. Can you fill us in on the mileage and towing experience when you get back?

I plan on documenting every little detail Bill. I'll share it with the forum of course. By all accounts, it tows better than some V8s, while still delivering very good fuel economy. Proof will be in the towing though.

Did you get the 36 gallon fuel tank? If the towing mileage isn't there, the extra large tank helps to extend the range.

Nice truck. It appears from the 6250 lb GVWR that this is the 5.5' box (145" wheelbase), not the 6.5' box (156.8" wheelbase).

It looks like...

• GCWR = 12,600 lb
• towing capacity up to 7,600 lb (less passengers and cargo and likely options)
• payload = 1,640 lb (likely less options)

You're correct. The long wheel base/ long bed ones are basically impossible to find around here unless you go with the V8. I really wanted the Ecoboost 2.7L and did not need max payload, so the shorter box was fine. 1640 lbs isn't bad I guess for a "half-ton" truck. I saw similar numbers in comparable models from Dodge and Chevy.

The EcoBoost is a great power plant. I can't say about the 2.7 but the 3.5 in my 2012 F150 pins me back in the seat when I punch it, even when towing at 60 mph and is up to 80 before I can blink. I think you're going to love it, Robert.

Does it have the built in brake controller? Hopefully it will be in before you need to leave, what about a tonneau cover?

Any Ford dealer can install it in about an hour and it is essentially the same as a factory install. The Ford brake controller is the best brake controller I have ever used and I have had a few Tekonshas in my time.

Yes, the integrated Brake Controller too. They have a few different bed covers but I haven't decided which one.

You might consider getting an actual topper for the truck, as that will enable you to carry even more stuff. Plus it's nice when you don't have the trailer and want to camp for a night, you can sleep in the back with a small mattress. I've camped many nights with my pickup and topper, going places where no man could go with a trailer (though a woman maybe could).

We have a fiberglass topper ,painted to match our truck .The topper has opening windows with screens so you have ventilation. I use a foam pad and a sleeping bag in the back of the truck for sleeping on short fishing trips . I like the security of the topper versus a tonneau cover . The topper is more expensive but you have a lot more available "DRY " storage.

My dad has always had a shell on his truck and he often uses it as a camper for a quick fishing trip. I've spent many a night sleeping in the truck bed. For this truck, I don't want to sleep back there. Its a short box too, which would make sleeping a little tight. You do get alot more storage area with the shell, but you have to watch out for payload capacity and your GCWR when towing. They're very practical, but I've never cared for the look of them. In my case maybe its a "function follows form" thing.

I'm sure we'll love it too Carl. They had a static display at the dealership with various engine components from the 2.7L. Wow. The thing is built essentially like a diesel, from the block to the pistons. I was already well versed in the 2.7L specs and features, but the engineering that went into this engine is remarkable.
