King Pin Lock

My wife and I will be picking up our new 5.0TA in 3 weeks and want to purchase a King Pin Lock prior to pickup. Our research shows many choices and we don't know the advantages or disadvantages of one verses another. Do you have a favorite King Pin Lock?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark

I purchased the Trimax lock as we have had their products before and were very happy with them, they even sent us out a couple of extra keys when one broke on a previous lock. This is the one we bough from Amazon.

I've got the one ETI sell, it's okay.
Looks like, or is this one.

From what I've read the War-Lok is the best, but have no experience with it.

The War-Lock one looks serious. My luck would be to lose the key and then it would be a really long day. How would you get that off! It looks like it would be a great deterrent though.

I agree - this looks solid. I assume losing the key (and the spare key) would mean a locksmith visit to get the cylinder drilled out.

We have something simpler but still a full collar, like item 30900 at Coast (but we didn't pay that much), on a fifth-wheel (not Escape). Same this from Amazon: RoadPro RPKPSL-2 Heavy Duty Steel King Pin Lock. It's easy to use. No one has tried to steal the trailer, but I have no idea if the lock has been a factor.

The one Bob showed (similar model from Husky shown on that Coast catalog page) looks like a regular ball mount locking pin plus a U-shaped strap.

It would seem to me that one could lose the key to any of the locks discussed in this thread. I fail to see why that possibility would dissuade someone from using the War Lock. If the other locks do not frighten anyone as much, wouldn't they have the same effect on a potential thief? Simple solution: don't lose the key and keep a spare key where you can access it.

I agree that if a lock works, it's a problem to lose the key. If a lock is easy for the owner to remove without a key, it is easy for a thief to defeat.

The U-shaped locks look like something I could saw off if I had to, while the full collar locks (such as mine or the War-Lock) would call for a locksmith. That might matter...

Donna,

Will this lock work on your 5.0TA with a Lube Plate installed or do you have to remove the Lube Plate?

Thanks,
Mark

I have the same lock for my 5.0 and yes it works with the lube plate. Note that the lock installs with the key cylander facing down not up as pictured.

It works with the lube plate. Currently on Ten Forward... with lube plate.

I didn't just read the recommendations on Amazon, but went to the manufacturers site. Liked what I read. One point (either good or bad for you), is the key hole is on the bottom. THAT works for me as we have a lot of rain that comes down sideways. I figured it would help protect the locking mechanism with the key hole on the bottom. So far so good.
