Mileage towing 19 ft Escape with v-6 Tacoma

3 month traveling in southwest (5000 miles) and averaging 15-16 (US) mpg driving less than 60 mph
No sway bar or equilizer hitch and tows just fine in mountain passes and high winds. I keep it off cruise control
in the hills and use 5th gear unless transmission starts "searching", otherwise 4th gear. Climb steep grades at
40-45 even though engine has torque to maitain 65 but sucks lots of gas.

That's the key isn't it, keeping it below 60mph : - ( I just can't seem to do that...but at 70-75 mph, I still get 13.7 mpg pulling our 5.0, and maintaining that uphill too! Just love to zip past all the "land whales" on the upslopes : - )

Towing a trailer at those speeds, requires what RPMS, I understand RPM better than MPH when it comes to fuel consumption.
Our Dodge Dakota with a V8, seems to get the best mileage between 1700 and 2000 RPM.
Of course going up hill this has to be increased to maintain MPH.
