New Mazda CX-5 Diesel as a tow vehicle?

My wife & I have been big fans of diesel vehicles, having a 2004 VW Jetta Wagon TDI since new. Unfortunately, it is unable to tow our 2014 17B, so we invested in a used 2009 RAV4 V6 as primarily a tow vehicle.
We are now looking at retirement in the near future , and are thinking about combining the two vehicles together. Ideas that we have come up with are the new Mazda CX-5 diesel or GMC Canyon/Chevy Colorado diesel.
I think she'd prefer the SUV, as it's shorter and she prefers smaller vehicles, especially as they usually get better fuel economy.
The Mazda can tow up to 3500 lbs., and the Canyon/Colorado 7700 lbs. We might be able to track down a used GM truck, but the Mazda is just coming out, so no used ones there. The Mazda is new to us here in NA, but has been used for a number of years elsewhere in the world.
We'd love to hear opinions from others. Thanks!

Peter
