I don't think Toyota "tries" anything. They have a reputation to protect.

The number of cylinders is not important to performance or reliability (although more cylinders usually means smoother); keep in mind that all those huge (up to 60 tons) big rigs on the highways have 6-cylinder engines. Engine displacement does matter, to some extent, but the RAV4 engine is 2.5 L... not that much smaller than the 3.0 to 3.6 L V6's in most vehicles towing Escapes.

It won't be really quick, but I expect that it will work.

I completely agree, but I also like the idea of using the turbocharged inline 4 cyl in the Lexus NX. That would boost the HP to the 235 range and the torque to around 258 ft lbs. Very capable powertrain, matched with 3500 lbs of towing capacity would make for one nice compact SUV. Of course, all this is mere speculation, and assumes that the towing capacity would remain the same with the smaller displacement turbo.

Can't wait until Ford comes out with an Easthope F150.
Love the sound of that engine.

How about one of these?

I have an old Ideal hit and miss engine that one day I plan to tear down and rebuild.
Fords would sound good with "pop spin spin spin spin pop" coming from under the hoods.

My Ford Escape (loved that vehicle) had the tow package with the 4 cylinder two litre engine and Ecoboost (which I understand is a turbo engine). It was rated at 3500 lbs and towed my 2000 lb boat in hilly country with no problem. This vehicle did not have a 7 pin connector. I've since changed vehicles since the Ford Escape would probably have been under powered to tow the 19 foot trailer.

I'll take this one - and it's only 4 cylinders!

The Lexus NX with the 2.0 turbo is only rated to tow 2,000 pounds, but as the Ford Escape EcoBoost example suggests, it (or the RAV4 version of the same vehicle) could probably be equipped (by Toyota) for 3,500 pounds... if sufficient market opportunities were recognized.

I like Toyota's but the RAV is a bit small for my tastes. Might trade my Ford 460 for a Toyota Tacoma though......

My Rav4 works pretty hard even with the V6 pulling a 2500 lb trailer over some of the steep mountain rds in Idaho

It's just a car with big tires . I wouldn't tow a trailer . Bike rack ..maybe.
Or Maybe a trip to the mall on a snowy day .
