Escaping the heat in a 21 and a Durango

We traded our Jeep in on a Dodge Durango a couple of weeks ago. We really liked the Jeep GC with two wheel drive and a Hemi engine but the new Jeeps only offered that in 4 wd and if we needed that we were in the wrong spot. The option was the Durango with the Hemi and 2wd. We had to accept 12" longer O'all and 6" longer wheel base but we still had the short turn radius plus another row of seats that totally disappears. The longer wheel base feels very good on the twisty mountain roads at any speed. We left two weeks ago from Tucson to Santa Fe, Durango, Co, Silverton, Ouray, Gunnison,, Black Canyon, Paonia, over Grand Mesa to Grand Junction and tomorrow to Flagstaff and then home. Dodge is getting 25/26 not towing, 16 towing on somewhat level area all at speed limits or above. Climbing Grand Mesa from the Delta side we were down to 9mpg but that must be at least 8% and we were not passed by anyone. Not a bad vehicle for about $44,000 out the door and we passed a Porsche twin turbo towing an Airstream that was driving at 70 until we got to the hills in N.Mexico and we went right on by and didn't see him again. With 40 to 50,000 miles on the Jeep towing 4000+# I like the Dodge more.

P.S. I do like that 8 speed trans with the paddle shifters, I just have to remember that I don't have a shift lever.

Perhaps we can have drag races next year at Osoyoos, your mileage will get better with more miles, mine did.

Was waiting to hear something from you and the trip terrain was challenging. Red Mountain Pass between Durango and Silverton by itself is a good barometer as to how well and comfortable the tow is.

Mileage numbers sound way better than expected. Are you saying you prefer to manually shift through the gears with the paddle shifter?

Paddle shifters

I didn't think about them until I used them. I always preferred manual unless in down town SFO. With 8 speeds going up hill or down hill it was fun and quick to do it myself.

those are really impressive mileage #'s for the Durango.
