One 4Runner question answered, another appeared...

Again a 2002 Toyota 4Runner 4WD 3.4L question: How fast am I allowed to tow with this TV? On some forums I read that Toyota recommends 45 mph? Now THAT is s l o w... I would expect around 55 to 60 mph...

You can tow as fast as your vehicle can go, no faster.
On flat stretches I bet you could do 80 - 90 mph,
up a 18% grad I bet you slow down to 30 - 40 mph or more.

I tow a 17B with a 2008 RAV4 V6. I try to keep my speed down to 60 mph for better fuel economy, but when I'm in heavy traffic on a highway, I drive the speed of the traffic, be it 65 mph or 70. Driving at 45 mph could get you killed or at least get you a ticket for impeding traffic.

I would think the determining fractor is actually the trailer tires, not your TV. Maybe Rease and Tammy have a word on that? But it's reasonable to consider 60-65 mph as normal.

Without the trailer I am typically 10 over on the highway, but with the trailer I pretty much stick to the speed limit unless it is unreasonably slow. I would think the 4Runner would be just fine doing the same.

Then I'd think that would be your maximum too. The Toyota and it's tires will do much better than that, but trailer tires are a little different. Probably good for us to slow down a little anyway! After all, we're relaxing!!!!!!

We just basically keep it around 60-65mph occasionally 70mph when I don't notice and it creeps up there.. Our philosophy is we'll get there when we get there and we enjoy the ride.. I think for me it's the combination of safety factor & MPG.. the faster you go the less time to re-act to a situation and less gas mileage you get to boot..

Best part of our recent trip home was tooling along on secondary roads in Idaho and eastern Washington state. There was very little traffic and a speed limit of 50 MPH most of the way. It was scenic and relaxing. Back in Canada on a highway with a 100 KPH limit and more traffic, I was stressed again. I love it when slowing down is an option.

Good to hear that those reasonable speeds are fine! 45 mph would have been just on the extreme low end. I probably will end up driving 60 to 65 mph on interstates then. Perfect! Nobody here has heard about the 45 mph limit set by Toyota then. Must be either a rumor, or something set for older models.

As we age this becomes mandatory, not an option.

Watch out for the Highway Patrol if you go over 55 mph in California!

65mph was no problem for us in our 99 4Runner pulling our loaded 19 - except for all the mtn passes & steep inclines of course. When Shay took her first turn driving, she got up to 70mph before she realized it and slowed back down. The car & trailer aren't limitations however, I agree with keeping with the trailer's tire ratings. Supposedly, if you are going to travel at higher speeds, it's better to increase the tire pressure on the trailer's tires (within specs as well). On the interstates, I like to try to keep with the flow but I'm with Glenn in that, when possible, it's most enjoyable to take scenic backroads & go at a slower pace where you can soak in the sights/sounds/smells (excluding the occasional pig & cattle farms) in addition to getting better fuel economy.

Re: One 4Runner question answered, another appeared...

I had a surprise with my 4Runner recently. Tires. I had about 63,000 miles and was watching tread wear and tread depth. Feeling pretty pleased that I was getting all those miles out of the original set and expecting I would be able to get another year or two.

My local mechanic burst my bubble when she informed me the tires should be replaced due to their age. When in for servicing they had checked the manufacture date, located on the inside of the tire and said it was over seven years old and should be replaced.

I did not need convincing and replaced with the exact same tire even though it cost and arm and a leg. With SUV's there has been numerous issues with being top heavy and prone to rollover and then of course we had the Bridgestone tire issues on Ford Explorers. Tires do need some attention.

Re: One 4Runner question answered, another appeared...

I agree. The tread on my tires was more than fine but my mechanic suggested that they should be changed b/c they were 6 years old. He said that age makes them prone to dry rot that you can't necessarily see which could result in a blowout at an inopportune time such as when pulling a trailer. That was enough for me. I had Bridgestone Revos on there and replaced them with the new Revo 2's which are now rated for mud and snow. Good thing since we encountered a lot of it on our trip. But I digress... my mechanic also recommended changing from a Passenger rated tire to a Light Truck rated tire with the 10-ply sidewalls since I was going to be towing a trailer. Makes for a slightly rougher ride but I like the safety aspect.

All I can add to that is, I got Yokohama Geolander light truck tires for the '94 Explorer ( courtesy of Firestone, for the most part ). As those tires aged the road noise became deafening. When I replaced them I couldn't believe the sound of silence. I could hear every other part of the SUV coming apart, including the engine. Now, it sits in the driveway, 6,000K on the new tires, no plates, a blown head gasket and one offer to purchase for $250.

Last year I got MS light truck tires from Michelin for my 4Runner. Very silent ride, love them so far. I needed new tires, as the old ones were just worn.
