Rav 4 fog lights / protection

Took the Rav in for its first service and they reported a broken, left fog lamp housing. I have no idea how it occurred. The lamp is recessed and there is no surrounding damage. Essentially only the lens appears broken. Replacement is $214 plus installation.

If the light still works, I plan to cut a disc out of plexi-glass and use adhesive caulking to cover the lens. I think I'll make another for the right side, if they are that easily damaged.

My buddy Keath faces a bill of $475 plus installation to replace his skid guard on his Hyundi Santa Fe. He trashed it, backing up in some deep snow. Apparently, the Hyundi "skid guard" is made of plastic and gets brittle when cold. Clever Japanese eh?

Hi Glenn

Don't use plexiglass, stop by your local "Crystal Glass" shop and get a piece of 3mm lexan
its 1/8" thick, you can cut it with a saw, sand the edges and drill it.... and its rock proof.

Lexon is a much better choice, we put it on the front windows of a tug boat to keep the seas from blowing them out

Re: Rav 4 fog lights / protection

Since the shape of the lens wasn't completely round, I made a template. Glass shop quoted $20 plus tax. When I went to pick it up, they had cut two, perfect fit, lousy caulking job with Silicon II. I'll have to have another look at it and maybe redo it. The Silicon was quite runny, given the temp.

Thanks guys.

Hyundai is a Korean company.

Does it cover the existing lens or does it sit in front of it? Why don't they put covers on them to start off with, seems pretty stupid to me.

My lexan cover replaces the broken lens, but you could glue it on top, using adhesive caulking. That would give enough separation I would think, to protect the glass lens. I'll send the template as soon as I can figure out my scanner. Haven't used it in a long time.
