RAV 4 V6 mileage w/ 17B

Just back from our latest excursion, from Vancouver to Merritt over the Coquihalla and back.

We had a full load. Water and propane topped up and a large pontoon boat on top of the RAV.

We averaged 15.1 liters per 100 kilometers / 15.57 miles per U.S. gallon / 18.71 miles per Imperial gallon.

Traveled 582.6 kilometers ( mostly with trailer in tow ) and used 87.982 liters.

I opted for mid-grade ( 89 octane ) with all the hills we had to climb.

Sounds pretty close to mine. RAV4 Sport, V6 & trailer Package - just under 15mpg towing, 17.4 for an 18,700 mile trip with 90% towing. All US Gallons...

I should mention that I went up the Coquihalla at 90 kph and that I had a hard time keeping under 100 kph on the flats. A lighter foot, and no pontoon boat would increase mileage.

400 miles is not bad for not being able to open your rear door, but 18,700 without rear access might get annoying.

We are looking at purchasing a small SUV in the spring with the RAV4 being the frontrunner so far. Has anyone tried a longer receiver on the hitch to provide rear door clearance? Will the weight distribution hitch still function with the hitch extension?

Thanks for posting the fuel economy results - they give a more realistic look at the vehicle instead of Transport Canada figures that rate the RAV4 V6 at 37mpg (imperial) "empty".

Re: RAV 4 V6 mileage w/ 17B

The only time I have a problem with not being able to fully open the rear hatch is when I need something that's in the rear compartment that's under the floor. I usually have something piled on top of the compartment, like a five-gallon water jug and the genset and it would be nice to be able to easily unload it. However, I can get at and remove gear in the back of the RAV via the rear passenger doors. So, I try not to keep items that might be needed frequently in the under-floor compartment.

I can open the rear hatch enough to reach in and grab small stuff. Overall, it's not a big issue.

On the other hand, Toyota can't seem to conclude that they should offer the rear door with hinges on the opposite side for the North American market. If you are parallel parked downtown and need to load something into the rear, you have to carry it out onto the street and then open the door to load it. If the hinges were on the other side you could open the door and load from the sidewalk.

More RAV on a separate heading.
