Re: RAV mileage

It may be a little late to add to this discussion but here goes. I pull with a Honda Ridgeline and it's manual recommends, the same as the RAV 4 manual , that a wdh not be used. I was told by a mechanic at the Honda house ( therefore it must be the gospel truth ) that there were two concerns with the wdh one, due to the unibody construction ( same as the RAV 4 ) there are concerns that if improperly adjusted it could perhaps provide to much torque force to the unibody frame; and second that similiarly improper adjustment could place to much load on the front axles. Either explanation could be totally out in left field but both do seem plausible to me . Lee

Re: RAV mileage

You did better than I at finding an explanation ( although, it should be noted that the recommendation isn't in the 2009 RAV manual ). I spoke to a tech at Hidden Hitch and he said that recommendation is similar to the recommendation that you not take your four-wheel-drive vehicle off road. They are protecting themselves from liability.
Anyway, ran the rig through a scale on this last trip. Front axle was 1080 kg, rear was 970 kg and trailer axle was 1280 kig. I figure, since I think the RAV is front-wheel-drive when 4x4 isn't required, that there should be a bit more weight on the front.
