Roof Rack on the 5.0?

Has anyone installed or had installed a roof rack for a kayak? I really like the 5.0, but doubt I could fit a Kayak on my Frontier roof and still have room for the 5.0 to pivot.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Roof Rack on the 5.0?

I had thought about it, and Reace sent me photos of one he had done. He had fiberglassed the mounts onto the body for strength. On thing to consider though, is that if you ever want A/C, it would not work so good with a rack.

Re: Roof Rack on the 5.0?

by the time you get roof vents, ac, solar panels and tv antenas or some combination of those there really isnt much room left to use the roof for storage. one of the many reasons i wanted a 19 ft instead of the 5.0. still leaves the box of the truck and the ability to put a canoe or kyak on the roof of the truck.

Hi: Scuba55...HokieEscape usually carrys two Kayaks on the roofrack of his Frontier. He does have a longbed Crew Cab LE though. There are pics. of this combo in action on one of the threads about 5.0's. Alf

Re: Roof Rack on the 5.0?

I didn't see the pics, but i would imagine they must have been river kyaks, I don't imagine a lake/sea kyak with its length would balance out very well.

Re: Roof Rack on the 5.0?

Here are a couple of photos of kayaks on our Mazda B4000 towing a 5.0. We use a Yakima Dock on the front and a standard rack on the cab. I have been told that the racks can fit on a Frontier.

And, the problem with carrying boats on the trailer roof is getting the boats to the water.
Best the trailer stay at camp and the boats ride on the tow.

That is a cool setup! I'll have to file that one for future use.

I agree, that is a great set up. I will have to explore vendors like etrailer.com to see if they have this type of set up.

Thanks to all that contributed!

Re: Roof Rack on the 5.0?

I am with baglo. The way we pack is anything that we want for when we are mobile away from the campsite goes in the tow, and what gets used only in the campsite gets stored on the trailer. Plus, you would need a ladder to get it up there. With a canoe on the tow, it is an easy one person job to put it up there.

Re: Roof Rack on the 5.0?

No way we would consider trying to put anything on top of our 19'. We have had enough fits wrestling with the cover. That alone was more than heavy enough to fool with on a ladder.

Re: Roof Rack on the 5.0?

i realy like the idea of having a cover for our new trailer but my wife did mention that the posibility of it being dificult to get on and off. We both laughed because she is ushually the one with good logic to reel me in on these sort of things. Does any one with a cover have any insight on how difficult it is to get a cover on and off a 19 ft

Re: Roof Rack on the 5.0?

Dmac, it is a good idea to have one no matter the trouble because of UV damage to fiberglass. We did not get ours a moment too soon considering the 100 plus temps (translate to Canadian please) on many days, normally unheard of, this drought year. We use a piece of PVC to push it around. One tip: Get it tied down very well with ropes and bungee cords or the wind will take it right off. As they say, don't ask how I know.

This thread is morphing fast, but for those that are members of the CasitaForum, here's two threads that show how to quickly put a cover on a 17' Casita.. and materials list to make the poles. Should work the same for any size Escape! http://www.casitaforum.com/invboard/...__1#entry68334

Re: Roof Rack on the 5.0?

I have a rack for the two 10' sit-on-tops, that fit on the roof rack only. Below is the "goalpost" rack for our longer unit...got it through e-trailer I think.....works great!
Like someone said, you want to keep your boat on the vehicle that takes it to the lake (or river, or shore).
