So I can 5th wheel with a Tacoma, eh?

With apologies to the OP, I mentioned in his Upgraded Escape 5.0 advertisement thread that I was of the understanding I cannot put a 5th wheel hitch in the composite bed of my Tacoma.

I have since been corrected there several times and decided to start a new thread here for those discussions.

My wife and I are excited at the possibilities now, seeing as we've been operating under the impression that we couldn't consider a 5th wheel. We were originally told this by the Toyota dealer when we bought the truck.

I understand that others have had very positive experiences with the Tacoma/5.0 combo.

Does anyone have photos or links for the installations they have done to their Tacomas? I'm new to this but I'd sure like to learn more.

Keep in mind that most shops and dealers think of a whole different animal when you say 5th wheel...think behemoth.
On our Frontier we were told that our title would be reduced to salvage if we drilled into the frame. So we didn't but our hitch shop was able to work around that. We were also told that all warranties were void if we put a 5th wheel hitch in the truck....not really worrying about that. We just close the tonneau cover when we bring it in for service. The Escape (and Scamp) do not come close to the weight of the traditional fifth wheels but most places are not familiar with them and cannot even imagine such a thing.

Thanks FMLNM.

I'm liking the sound of this more and more.

I've been totally impressed with the hitch shop I've used for my last 3 trucks. Granted, none have been 5ths but they seem to know their stuff.

If I were you I'd take a 5.0 picture and specs with you and have a chat with them....

Very generous offer, Adrian.
I'll mention it to my wife and we may take you up on it.
If so, I'll PM you.

Remember, these are for a Scamp 5er. But the rails still needed to be mounted into a Tacoma composite box:

Hi; FMLNM... Nissan say's in the owners manual...Frontier is not recommended for towing a fifth wheel trailer. I hooked my 5.0 to the truck and towed up to the front window of the showroom. Every one in the place came out to look!!! Alf

I'm not surprised! Like I said...most folks have no concept of the fiberglass 5th wheelers. They have just one image in mind...
