Stuck in 1st

This may be nothing to worry about, but within 5 minutes of our first excursion last Friday I was turning right off our street onto a very steep road and our car refused to shift out of first. We ended up climbing the hill doing 12km an hr. It was fine after this first climb, we had much steeper/longer climbs after this. Curious if maybe it was something I did wrong, or if anyone has had something similar occur.

Our Sorento was automatic, so when it got stuck I switched to manual and tried unsuccessfully to shift up as well. RPM's never went above 3000.

Maybe it's possible that your transmission has an adaptive mode that changes after a few minutes once it adjust to the parameters of the new load.

I know my old Ford Ranger took a few clicks before it settled down. The first few minutes after leaving ETI I was thinking, "well this was a mistake expecting the Ranger to pull the 19". Ended up just fine and towed the 19 far and wide.

Maybe something in diagnostics caused it to go into limp mode.

Could be, but all the transmissions I've destroyed went into at least 2nd gear when they went into "Limp" mode. Once made the entire 400 mile trip from Hyannis to Oswego in 2nd at 40MPH in a Town & Country van. Luckily, I wasn't towing...

fingers crossed I don't destroy a transmission :-) . Hopefully it just needed warming, we're going camping again in 2 weeks so I'll see how it fairs then. I was due for a transmission flush so I got that done yesterday.
