Tacoma super charged V6

Forgive me if I'm beat'n a dead horse.
I own a 2010 Tacoma w/tow package, 4L v6 and supercharger.
Look'n at a 19' and don't want to "struggle" drawing 3000 + lbs.
Any experience with this truck w or wo supercharger would be great.
Only interested in responses pertinent to Tacoma and 19' Escape.
Thanks

Can you provide the spec's shown on your vehicle's door jamb as far as capacities, also explain supercharged Tacoma, I was not aware there was such a combo. There are several non supercharged Taco owners of 17/19/21 Escapes.

Without heading to the garage... tow capacity is 6500lbs.
Supercharger is factory installed.(TRD)
HP is 304
lb.ft.trq is 334
Has plenty of towing ability for 2400 + lbs Casita
Am not interested in struggling with a 19 footer plus cargo.

I'm assuming you have the dealer installed TRD supercharger and auto transmission.

Since I own a 2013 TRD supercharged 4.0 DBL cab long bed Tacoma and a 19 I guess I am qualified to answer. Towing wise you will have no problems. Going up inclines, high altitudes and such are no problem ( other than monitoring engine and transmission temperatures ).

I'll assume you do not have a tuner so you run only on premium
When I leave mine at factory setting on premium I get just under 15 mpg average doing around 65 mph towing the 19. ( I do have a smaller pulley and slightly larger injectors so that lowers it a bit) This is assuming you drive at a normal pace. If I were to keep it around 55 mph and really granny it I could probably raise the mpg some more.

You will want to get rid of the wallet size transmission cooler for a larger cooler and consider either a Scangauge or Ultragauge MX with the pan and torque converter temperatures and transmission lock monitored. Doing that when you are on level ground or slight uphill or downhill or have a tailwind you can leave it in drive and shift down when the transmission unlocks. It's obvious, you start seeing the torque converter temperature climb.
Per the Toyota people that is safe to do

So no you will not struggle pulling a 19.

I bought the supercharger when I was talked into a large trailer by the folks at one of the mega trailer dealers on I-4 near Tampa Fl. My truck on paper could tow it but in real life the often single digit gas mileage and snail pace acceleration and crawling up steep hills meant one of the two had to go. Sadly I did not know yet how big of a POS the trailer was so I started looking at trading the truck. And quickly decided I needed another option, The supercharger was considerably less than trading it in and made the trailer towing acceptable. Then the trailer started showing its faults so I dumped it and went with the 19.

One thing to note, check the carry capacity of your truck. Mine is 1150 Lbs driver, passengers and cargo. That is not much. Your hitch will weigh around 95 to 100 plus pounds and then there is the hitch weight of around 450 to 500 pounds. And whatever you have on or in the vehicle like a topper and step bars etc. We have a topper so I carry myself and the wife and a small cooler in the truck and load everything else in the trailer so I do not need to worry about exceeding the capacity. You will run out of carry capacity long before you run out of towing capacity. And a lot of other truck brands have the same problem.

wetzk.. thanks for the very helpful No nonsense response.
My carrying capacity is a bit higher, do have a topper.
Will carry a canopy and light weight odds and ends in the bed.
Also two Ultra light canoes on top. (at times)
We go very spartan.

They were discontinued when the Gen 3 came out in 2016.

If you could find one yes your local dealer could install it and reflash the ECU. The nice thing was since it was Toyota the warranty covered it. There are aftermarket versions too but I never looked at them.

Yes the Fastway E2. I had a Blue Ox swaypro and sold it as it weighed a lot more.

I'm hoping not to need one, what are your thoughts?
Have you towed 19'/Tacoma combo without WHD?

Your Casita probably has about as much tongue weight as the 19. If you do not have issues with it I imagine you won't with the 19. I like it more for damping down bumpy roads. I've never tried towing without the bars connected.

Check out your truck's payload capacity carefully (door sticker). All that extra stuff on the truck comes out of the payload rating. Also any option added after the factory by the dealer or you comes out of the payload. I have several such items: spray in bed liner, side steps, camper top). All cut into my payload. Good chance you will be over that rating.

Now what you do at that point is a personal decision. But go into it fully informed.

For some reason, many pickups have relatively low payload ratings yet relatively high tow ratings. The more deluxe your model truck, the worst it gets. In the Ford world, XLTs can have double the payload rating of a Platinum model.

Going from a single axle to a tandem axle will feel like night and day, towing. There is little sway, if properly loaded, as the tandem wheels tend to track straight vs the single axle which can turn on a time.

another killer is the crew cab models... way heavier body with the same GVWR == less payload.

My 2009 Extra cab TRD sport Tacoma (6,500lbs tow rating) pulls our 17' Casita no problem with a bed full of camping gear. It might be pushing 4,000lbs.

I pulled a 7x14 double axle cargo trailer over the Rockies from Oregon to Colorado just after I got the truck & trailer. No clue how much that weighed now that I think about it, but it was probably 4.7-6k. Had to flog the engine a bit & it was mighty thirsty, but it pulled fine.

I pulled a 3,000-3,500lbs trailer with about 3,000-3,500lbs of tractor on it a few times. I was either right at the 6,500lbs rating or maybe a bit over. It did it, but everything was maxed out. Had to flog the engine to get acceleration (but it would do it), suspension wasn't super stable, & most importantly brakes weren't up to snuff (even with brakes on both trailer axles). It did it, but it wasn't pleasant. I got the beater high mileage F250 for pulling a trailer for my side gig doing tractor work shortly thereafter.

As others noted double axles pull a fair bit more stable than a single. My 4,000lbs power tilting deckover pulls like a dream behind the Taco. Better than the Casita, which is several hundred lbs lighter. I will hitch the deckover to the Taco over the F250 for longer runs with loads under 1,000lbs as it pulls nicer (and isn't a beater with 225,000 miles on it with busted AC).

A supercharger gives you more power, which is the least relevant thing for towing. Brakes is #1, suspension is #2.

I'd wager a Tacoma is going to be a good tow vehicle up to around 5,000lbs or so. It will likely be a bit thirsty & may need a WDH, but will do well. Much past that & you need a better truck.

Thanks for the reply, all good info.
Have been towing 17' Casita with "stuff" in the bed and two solo canoes on the cap.
Have not needed a WDH, hauls good even on most hills.
Do have Timbren bumpers to replace the stock units.
We've decided on the 17B, soooo.. I don't anticipate any issues
