I’m reasonably sure you can keep your tow weight below 5,000 lbs and that you can tow with your 2016 in good shape. The personal choice comes in with how comfortable you feel shrinking your “freeboard” as you approach 5,000 lbs. and the 500 lb tongue weight. Your driving habits and technique and satisfaction with the speeds you will comfortably drive without having the transmission “Hunt” are both personal and mechanically important in that regard. The judicious use of downshifting on significant downhill descents, making sure that your trailer brakes are adjusted properly, and your brake controller is set for the conditions at hand so that the trailer is “taking care of itself” and you’re not torturing the Highlander brakes are also important. Practice, experience and a healthy jigger of common sense go a long way in the towing cocktail.
