Here are the Consumer Reports repair records for trucks for 2015. Please note that this is ONLY for the totally objective repair records and not for the more subjective test drive opinions of the magazine testers. The Tacoma, being new, did not have enough respondents to list its repair record.

Well dang- no Tacoma- no responses. Canceled CR over 20 years ago; lost me with objectivity(have owned 7 Toyotas-still have an '01 Avalon). In this digital world it's tough to be relevant enough for people to pay for a subscription.

We started with a Toyota Tacoma TRD Double Cab and our Escape 19 which worked good, averaged about 14.5 - 15 MPG. Then we bought a GMC Sierra with the 5.3 and 6 speed transmission which we averaged about 15.5 - 16 MPG. We then upgraded our 19 to a 5.0TA which we pulled with the Sierra and found our MPG dropped to about 15 at best. Then we bought a new Sierra 1500 with the 6.2 (420 HP and 460 LBS of torque) and 8 speed transmission, this truck also has the NHT package with the 3.42 gears and with this we average 17 - 17.5 MPG. These averages were calculated driving to and from the same places. We noticed the 6.2 hauled better on the flats and through the mountains no question.

Cheers
Doug

But supposedly your tranny might fall out the back & ding your TA looking at that long black mark CR posted. Seriously though, that has to be a record for 5.O TA mileage. 8-speed for GM; who knew?

Does the record of anecdotes from CR readers from less than a year of history mean much?

Is the Colorado/Canyon record based on that same one year of reports? While a bunch of problems in the first year isn't good, I don't think it says much about long-term reliability.

What does the asterisk on several of the trucks mean?

Interesting trivia for gearheads: this 8L90 is the same transmission as used in the Corvette... and nearly the same engine as the Corvette as well.

No, you're not supposed to tow with the 'Vette.

I gave up on CR many years ago when they said the Corvette lacked luggage space and couldn't accommodate a family of four comfortably.

I, too, gave up on CR many years ago... but when they:
  • condemned the Omni/Horizon, not for abysmal quality, but because it you turned the steering wheel a quarter turn then let go, the vehicle didn't settle in a straight line (a truly ridiculous handling test), and
  • declared after testing the original Jeep Cherokee with the 4-cylinder that their readers should buy the V6 which they assumed would be more powerful and better... even though they never tested the V6, and that GM-sourced piece of junk was actually no more powerful and proved unreliable.

There is no automotive expertise at Consumer Reports. I bet they know toasters, though.

Yes, I often don't care much for the subjective opinions of the CR reviewers; that is the reason I only posted the repair records. The repair record reports are the results of "...a comprehensive survey of owners of 740,000 vehicles. The survey asked detailed questions about 17 trouble areas covering all of a car's substantial components and systems." (Anything but anecdotal evidence.)

BTW, the asterisk indicates that the model was brand new or redesigned, and "...predictions may be based on a single model year's data..."

Nope that was my Toyota, front end fell out too. New Toyotas weren't built like the old ones I had. 6 - 7 months of the year in and out of 4 wheel drive by the 4th year it fell apart. Love the Sierra though.

Cheers
Doug
