I used to tow our 17 with an 1989 4Runner (they have weak rear leaf springs) and I never had a problem unless the truck was loaded heavy and the trailer was loaded with too much weight forward - then the steering got a little light. Always easily corrected by better packing habits (and taking out the excess stuff everyone wants to put in...)

I now tow with a 2000 4Runner and its not a problem. I've started using an equalizer hitch just to stop porpoising on some roads, but its not realy needed. I really doubt you'd have a problem with an 08 Tacoma unless you're planning on overloading the truck with gear.

Whatever TV you have, I suggest reading the owners manual to see what the TV mfgr. says is required for towing.
With my Odyssey, Honda says a tranny cooler and power steering cooler are required. I wouldn't want to tow without them.
Also, I believe that a WDH adds a safety margin to the tow set-up. You may never really need it, but who knows. The cost is fairly inexpensive when considering how much we spend for our TT's. Plus it is one more thing that keeps everything hooked together.
My suggestion is that if someone says you need it, [Brake Controller, WDH, Sway Bar] go for it. You will only pay once.

I tow my 17B with a 2003 Nissan Frontier 2.4l 4cyl. rated for 3000lbs. I installed overload springs and heavier shocks. I attain anywhere from 20 - 24 mpg depending on the hwy. The 17B tows better than my old Trilluim and feels safer with the equalizer hitch and electric brakes. I get down into 2nd gear on those long Coq. hills and that big hill out of Littlefort but the rest of the time it's 90-95 km without any problem.
I don't tow with much water in the tank as I carry lots of other gear. I weighed the unit at the scales in Vanderhoof and was just at my combined GVW. I don't try and rush when towing and just sit back and enjoy the scenery. A V6 Frontier will be the next purchase after I mile out my little Frontier unless a small diesel truck gets to our North American market in the next couple of years.
