Thank you Mr Vermilye for your honest evaluation and critique of your tow vehicle . I as many others found it very informative and worthwhile.

For what it is worth we average about 14.5 with the 2014 Highlander on longer trips. Shorter trips tend to be more variable because a long day into a big headwind will wreck havoc with the numbers and a long day with the wind will make me smile. I find that wind is mor significant than hills. Not sure which gear I am in, but usually running around 2k rpms on the flats.

Why would ETI update their website for your forum. They provide a product, how it is used is up to you and I, not them? There is a thread over on FGRV with weights and gas figures. If you want an Escape only information then start a thread with your own towing gas use and hopefully other Escape owners will post.

To throw another option out there consider the Colorado/Canyon small diesel. I now have a bit over 20000 miles on mine with no problems. On level ground and no wind it will tow a 21 at 20mpg without straining. Haven't checked overall mileage in a while but I was getting results in the high teens for a tank of fuel while towing.

For anyone who is interested in actual numbers on 2018 Tacomas, they are very easy to find on the Toyota website.
Such as the SR5 4x4 Double Cab; GCWR 11360#, Payload 1295#, Towing capacity 6400#, Curb Weight 4305#, and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating 5600#.
As my signature indicates, I urge folks to read and understand the new testing involved in the SAE Towing Standards written and developed by automotive engineers. Toyota was the first major brand to adopt those standards in 2013.
And in no way am I denigrating Jon's comments on his experiences and opinions - I always consider Jon's opinions to be valuable.

The numbers / ratings published on the vehicle manufacturer's websites are accurate to a point . The numbers do not include all options available or installed . My 2014 vehicle has a payload capacity of approx 1600 lbs according to the Ram website , the sticker on my vehicle which shows the actual payload for my truck as built is approx 1300 lbs
A 20% reduction or variance from the published website numbers
If you are not towing at or near your vehicle's ratings, the website ratings may be close enough but if you plan on towing at or near 100% of the listed rating you may be unpleasantly surprised.
I do not believe the vehicle manufacturers are trying to be deceptive , just not 100% honest
The luxurious 1/2 ton truck they show you in their commercial and the 1/2 ton truck that can tow the space shuttle are not necessarily the same or similar truck.
Ford, GM , Chevy, and Ram are all compliant with SAE J2807 . SAE J2807 does not use fuel mileage as one of their towing standards as far as I know . I wonder why ?

I really doubt others claims of better mileage with a V-6 gas engine unless they are towing on flat terrain only.

F150, 2.7 Eco towing 5.0 TA @ 60mph (use cruise control) thru Vermont and New Hampshire gets 15.5-16.5 mpg. The engine rarely exceeds 3000 rpms. It’s not the Rockies, but definitely not flat, I couldn’t be happier with this combination

That’s good, Chotch! Last year we pulled our 21 from CA. to New Hampshire for a nice visit with my sister and family. We do not have the eco-boost on our 2015 Explorer, just the 290 hp V-6. Got 15.5 eastbound and 14.5 westbound. Over 6000 miles. The country is mostly flat as Ross points out, but the Sierras, Rockies, Appalachians, Catskills, etc. do go up and down a bit. We encountered a little more headwind on our way home, and that probably accounts for the difference. We too travel at 60 mph, not for the mileage, but because it’s usually the law and the roses smell better. This October we used the same combo to visit the Outerbanks of N.C.. Again, over 6000 miles, mostly on Highway 40. Averaged 15 mpg for the whole trip. My name is not Frank and I have no doubts in my math.
