Towing

What types of vehicles are you using to tow the Escape 19?

I've seen lots of them, but generally an SUV with at least 4000 lb towing capacity, or a pickup.

I agree that this is the typical choice... but perhaps only because all of the reasonably sized vehicles available that are rated for the required towing capacity are all SUVs, pickup trucks, and commercial vans.

A van might not be a bad idea, depending on your other requirements - the Ford Transit is the best match, but there are others.

Yeah - but I don't think it meets my "reasonably sized" criterion... although it's just a Volvo.

Hi Brian- if I were a betting man I would bet on the Ford Transit. Seems like it is going to be a big hit in many markets, what with the different engine options including diesel. This seems like a strong competitor to the Sprinter!

The Transit fuel consumption and aerodynamics would be better then our 2005 4Runner V8. Less bug splat to clean too!

I plan to tow my 19 this August back East with a 2014 V6 4Runner. I expect it to get a bit of a workout.

When not towing this is the perfect grocery getter for snowy days.

There always seems to be a tradeoff. Safety comes first.

We're going to use our 2010 Toyota Highlander with the factory-installed tow package... rated for 5,000 pounds. It tows our 17b very well... and there are a couple others on this forum who tow a 19 with a Highlander so I'm thinking we'll be ok.

Wish I had taken a photo of the rig at Icelandic State Park in ND last weekend. a transport and parked behind it a huge triple axel 5th wheel and behind that a 30odd foot trailer and no other truck around. They were parked in a double occupancy pull through. Since you can triple tow in ND I figured the transport pulled them both.

In walking around the park about 150 sites occupied and ours was the only FG.

We tow our 2010 19 ft Escape with a 2012 Highlander with tow package (5000 lb) and the standard weight distributing hitch. Does well for us. Towing at 62 mph or so, we get between 13.5 and 16.5 Mpg. Better on straight unleaded than ethanol blends which I don't buy unless I have to. Pulls the passes ok, just gotta use your head going up and watch the rpms. Coming down I like the shiftable side of the tranny. About 20,000'miles towing in the past two years. Nothing but Mobile 1 full synthetic for about 96000 miles on a 3 year,4 month old rig. Engine has never been cold, that's what retirement is for.

The 4Runner is well within the tow ratings for a 19', and we all know about Toyota's safety record
