If a trailer has electric brakes you must use them and the only way to do it is with a controller.

My wife uses a toque. She forgot it last trip so she put a pair of panties on her head.
I sleep facing the wall...

I agree with Ross's answer; here's a little longer version:
If the trailer is heavy enough, it needs working brakes - and all Escapes are heavy enough to need brakes.
If the trailer's brakes are electric, they need a controller to work - and all Escapes have electric brakes.

I looked this up for Washington- if the trailer is over 3000# it has to have working brakes. If the trailer is over 40% of the tow vehicle's weight it has to have working brakes. (In Washington this depends on the year of manufactuer but all the Escapes would go under the above rules.) So it depends on what you are towing it with, legally, and it may depend on the state or province.

Edit: BC:
Gross trailer weight of 1,400 kg (3,080 Ibs) or less – Brakes are required if the trailer and its load weigh more than 50% of the licensed weight of the vehicle towing it.

Ontario:
Brakes required if 3000 lbs period.

Yes, legally there are some places that you can legally tow the lightest Escapes without working brakes on the trailer, at least with some vehicles. Sensibly, and according to the manufacturers of probably every tow vehicle used with an Escape, you need trailer brakes.

Love this, love this love this.

Great blog and pictures. Sorry your train ride was a bust.

P.s. Maybe your wife shouldn't read or hear about your post.

Sometimes my plug gets slightly disconnected and my break lights are not working. If I'm going a long way I sometimes use duck tape to secure it. I find it is pretty easy to lose some of the connection if it gets moved a little.

The plug on my 2014 Silverado does not fit tightly and I have had the same issue. The latch keeps it in place but it needs to be squarely in place. My old Trailblazer had no issue. It is a ttruck problem not the trailer.
