Towing with a Ram 1500

I have the oven in my new 21' Escape, with solar and everything being 12v except for the a/c, I can cook wherever I like. I also have a 2014 Ram 1500, but decided against the diesel and went with the 5.7 Hemi. I have been driving a 2009 Hemi for past 5 years and it is a very capable tow vehicle. That said I did not feel the 3.0 L diesel will hold up as well as the almost twice as big 5.7 Hemi. Mine also came with the 8 speed transmission and 3:21 rear end and I'm getting 15 mpg towing, a 25% increase over my 2009 Hemi which averaged 12 mpg towing. I believe the diesel is getting around 19-20 mpg towing. But again there are up charges for both the fuel and the engine. Either way it is a capable tow vehicle with a built in brake controller.

Wow. Wonderful thread. Great timing. I just bought a RAM 1500 diesel a few days ago and haven't even had a chance to tow my 19 with it yet. It'll be at the Lake Casita gathering next week. I've been looking for a while for one, and I found mine at Clovis Dodge here locally. Only has 100 miles on it so far and the main reason I got it is towing fuel mileage. I plan to go many places, as long as my health holds up.

I'll start a new thread about the RAM diesel and hopefully keep a running tab on her. Black, crew cab short bed, with 20" black RAM wheels. Any ideas for names for her? Her primary purpose in life will be to pull my 19.

As for an oven in my camper, my 30' 2003 Keystone Everest 5th had the little oven in it and I remember my Ex only used it a few times for Cornish Game Hens, muffins and ai think she managed to cook a small turkey one year. The usable space to bake is the main restriction.

Devil is in the Details! Or DD for short. I would have purchased a Ram 1500 diesel when I was looking to buy... in April, but there wasn't a WHITE one available in the entire U.S. Trust me, the CSR at the dealership and I looked! Still lovin' my Ford F-150 w/ ecoboost.

Safe travels, always Mark!

Since it's a black Ram, how about Bram Stroker, even though it's probably not stroked.

I'm not sure yet. Even considered a Darth Vader influenced name. Love the input and thanks to all.
She does have a sinister look to her. Maybe Vaderette. lol

But I didn't get the fang option. Wonder if I can get aftermarket fangs.

Are you suggesting he should start a new road show, and use his trailer as a dressing room? He would need lots of closet space to hang his gowns.

Now that's cool, but I'll get a smaller set of teeth for my RAM. Don't want to scare anyone.

Mark,
You will love the new EcoDiesel, ours is a Black 2014 Crew Cab Laramie 4wd . Sue and I have put on 20,000 miles in six months traveling around the country and approx 50% of those have been towing our 21 5.0 TA. Without the trailer our mileage is usually 26-27mpg and pulling the trailer we get 17-18mpg. Use the Tow/Haul button in the hilly country and you will be amazed at how the transmission works.

Good Luck

I've had my RAM for a little more than a week and so far I love it. According to the trip computer I'm getting 19 MPG and that's all city with a little towing, but only used a 1/4 tank so far and went 150 miles. Looks like I may have a 400 mile range towing. My butt aches thinking about it. Longer trips will tell more, but time will tell. Maybe fangs will make her more aerodynamic.

Thumbs up

Ram update:

This is the first diesel I've owned and I'm lovin my new Ram. Have around 2000 miles on her now and the best towing mileage pulling my 19 is 19.6 so far. The 8 speed trans works wonders in hilly areas. I can use my cruise control more. 420 foot lbs of torque at 2000 RPM fulls like a train. 8.4" Nav/backup screen makes finding places and hooking up my 19 a breeze too. It's half ton bliss for me.

Did add a subtle set of fangs. Here's a few pics for ya.

That is better than mine, 21 on highway, 18 around town and 15 towing. I estimate maybe 16 if I had the 19. You have the 3:55 rear if I'm not mistaken. Here is a picture...I love the led lights at night.
