Towing with an F150 3.5 Ecoboost

How many of you folks tow a 19, 21 or 5.0 with one of these newfangled trucks? What sort of mileage do you get towing?

My last F150 was a 2005 4.6 liter extended cab, 6.5' bed, and had a 5400# tow capacity. It got 13 mpg normally, and 12 mpg towing a boat or trailer any distance. My boats never weighed over 1500#s all together and our Parkliner weighs maybe 2500#s going down the road. We hauled it to NC with the F150, that's how I figured the 12 mpg.

I am getting 22 - 26 empty and 14 - 16 towing with a 2016 3.5 eco. 2015 5.0TA. Depends on hills and wind. A little better than the Frontier.

Thats's pretty good mileage Dick. We don't do any better with the 2.7EB and haven't even yet tried towing our 5.0TA (picking it up Monday). Is that mileage just on your lovely country road?

We tow our 2017 21’ TT with our 2014 Ford Supercrew 3.5L EcoBoost 4x4.

We full-time, so our 5’ bed is packed, as well as the back seat area.

Our mileage is about 17-19 MPG without the Escape, and about 12-13 MPG when we are towing.

I tow a 2017 5.0 TA with a 2010 F 150, 5.4L V8, 4X2 and just completed trips to Death Valley and back and a trip to Idaho and back to Colorado. I get 13 to 13.75 mpg towing but I am in the market for a new F 150 3.5 Ecoboost with the 10 speed transmission.
My current truck is a Lariat, very comfortable on long trips but if I want to maintain 60 to 65 mph it is often winding out 3000 to 4000 rpm even on gentle hills. The torque and HP range on the 3.5 Ecoboost is at a lower rpm so I am assuming that towing, especially using cruise control, will be less distracting with less severe downshifting. I also am assuming a slightly better mpg towing and not towing. I don't see a need for a 4X4 towing the 5.0TA so I am looking for a 4X2 with the tow package, maybe the payload package, tow mirrors etc. If I lived in the flatlands I might be interested in the 2.7L Ecoboost but I am in Colorado and every trip towing the trailer has me going over mountain passes.

Consider if you want to mention the speed you drive at towing or not towing. I find my F-150 mpg varies significantly with speed (55mph vs 75mph for example).

I pick up my 21' in June so I'm curious also .

I tow my 5.0TA with a 2014 Ford F-150 w/ecboost 3.5L 4x4. I typically get a bit over 16 mpg towing at 60mph or slower... like 57mph. Going over the Siskiyous, I got 6mpg going up and 38mpg going down. But was able to maintain the speed limit without a strain. I love my truck.

Ours is a 2018 F150 2.7L EcoBoost V6, 2WD, direct/port injection, 10 speed transmission, 5.5' bed SuperCrew. Regular axle ratio, towing package. 26 highway, 20 city, about 16 towing.

The truck is a pleasure to tow with.

Tow my 2017 5.0TA with my 2016 F150, Crewcab, 4x4, 2.7 EcoBoost and get 14.5 to 17 mph so far. Rarly exceeding 3000 rpm. Have now towed it from Canadian border to Florida thru new England and I could not be happier. Could easily have stayed in the passing lane then entire time. Without the the trailer I can get 22mpg.
You will be happy with the "new fangled" EcoBoost, either 2.7 or 3.5.

We'll be looking at that same truck, a 2014, 2015, or 2016. Next year.

I am also a fan of the 57 mph club when towing a trailer. When I retire later this year, I will be in even less of a hurry.

2014 3.5 EB 4x4 with 8' bed and extra payload package, think heavy truck. 2014's have the old 6 spd tranny so this doesn't really tell you much if you are getting a new truck.

Towing 10ish - 14,
10-11 @ 73+/- mph
13-14 @ 55-60ish, which I rarely do.
Averaged 12.5 on the last 9k mile trip.

Not Towing, it says 15.5 at the moment, driving up into the Berkshires a couple times going fishing. I can make it average 20 mpg if I really try, which I don't.

MPG seem to vary about 1mpg for every 10mph.

Not that you care already having an egg, but when I went from a square bumper pull to the rounded Escape 5th wheel mpg jumped about 20%, same weight.

Robert do you notice much of a difference having the 10 speed tranny now?

Not alot Adrian. A bit harder to feel the shift points perhaps, and maybe a bit more torque available regardless of RPMs. Of course, that feel of a little extra power could be the result of the direct and port injection as well.
