Before the Eisenhower ("Ike") Tunnels were built in the early 1970's, you had to drive an even higher, steeper, curvier and narrower road over Loveland Pass (11,990 ft).

That was serious slow going, especially in the winter with 10's of thousands of skiers on the east side of the pass trying to get to and then back from all the big ski resorts on the west side of the pass.
