Hi: All... If you have a Toyota Model tow vehicle and the gas pedal sticks on!!! Remember "Just turn off the key" / "Shift to Neutral"!!! Alf

Re: TOYOTA Troubles???

The problem with turning off the key is that you lock the steering, which is an even more serious problem when on a curving road. It is probably better to shift to neural or gear down to the lowest gear. Who can think to that when you have a run-away vehicle?

Re: TOYOTA Troubles???

I am not panicking about my Rav4. If the gas stays stuck on, I plan to try to stop the vehicle with brakes, then shut off. I should check that I can shut off with the tranny in Drive.

I also want to check on Serendipity's comment. I thought that the steering is unlocked but the engine won't run in Acc mode.

Neutral is going to cause the engine to overrev, so I want to avoid that if possible.

I thought all Rav4s sold in Canada came from Woodstock, Ontario. Not true? Anyway, the news reports I have heard do not indicate this problem originates from any particular factory.

Link to Toyota Canada news release.

Link to document in which Toyota recommends braking to stop.

Ron: I believe that all the V6 RAV4s come from Japan. The 4 cylinder ones are made in Canada.

Hi: All... If turning off the key...you must turn it all the way to accessory position to maintain steering. First shift to neutral...then turn off the key as above. That was a recomendation of one of my local Toyota Dealers!!! Alf
escape artist N.S. of Lake Erie p.s. So far they are blaming a Canadian Supplier of gas pedals. What else is new

However, owners with the SmartKey option, to turn off the engine, you hold the Start button in for 3 seconds.

Hi: All... I heard on the radio of an owner of a '96 Camry who sent the car to the wreckers due to the gas pedal sticking and the age of the vehicle. "Not worth fixing" he said!!! I believe that newer models use a "fly by wire" type of system rather than a rod attached to the pedal and the throttle body of the engine!!! A very complex problem for sure. Alf

Re: TOYOTA Troubles???

Hi

Just had my Rav in for the recall,,,,as I thought the press is having its usual over the top reaction looking for babies hanging in the trees. They are just being super careful as they must. If it sticks put it in neutral and stay calm. Its not going to happen.

I absolutely love my RaV and boy can it go,,,Its a great car,,,,no doubt,.
Happy rails

Re: TOYOTA Troubles???

It is my understanding that the electronic controls of modern engines won't let them overrev as in the old days - so shifting into neutral should not cause any damage to the engine. (At least according to the "Click and Clack" Brothers on NPR)

Re: TOYOTA Troubles???

Hi: All...This is a serious issue. Seems Toyota doesn't know which way to deal with it!!! Just like I know my Windows Millenium Edition has a flaw and gets lost at times... so Ithink does the link to the Throttle Body Injection system of the infected cars computers. Most owners should know how to deal with it NOW...even if Toyota doesn't!!! Alf

Re: TOYOTA Troubles???

If my Tacoma goes beserk on me I will turn the key off before I'd shift into neutral. New cars do have a rev-limiter so under a load the ignition will cut out before damage will occur. But, under a "no load" situation there is a good chance that the valves will float before "redline" and, because my 4.0 liter is a zero clearance motor, they will contact a piston which would probably grenade the motor.

Re: TOYOTA Troubles???

My V6 Rav4 was made in Canada. To check, open the driver's door and look at the sticker below the driver's seat.

Wikipedia says Japanese-built Rav4s have Denso brand pedals, and are not subject to recall.
