Jeff-
Hello Jeff, I have a 2017 GMC Canyon Diesel and my door sticker says the combined weight of the occupants and cargo needs to be under 1,289 lbs. With reported pin weights of 700+ lbs I wouldn't think you'd have the capacity for several hundred pounds of fuel even if you traveled alone.

Depending on what tire/wheel combo you have, why not mount it vertically in that space? Not sure the spare would fit horizontally, particularly if oversized. My Ram also came with a temp wheel/tire and I carry a full sized spare in my bed also.

Hello Jim,
Perhaps mounting it horizontally would let you use a tonneau cover when not towing or just not be visible to the casual passer by who perhaps has sticky fingers.

The overall tire diameter for a Canyon is about 31 inches, so if that's the width of the rack then the forward hitch rail would be about 31 inches from the front of the box, and the midpoint between the rails would be about 42 inches from the front of the box. I don't think anyone has a hitch mounted in a Canyon that far back, since the axle is nowhere near that far from the cab. Perhaps the tire could overlap substantially over the forward hitch rail (by modifying the rack and offsetting the spare wheel mounting bolts rearward), but eventually the tire is going to hit the Andersen Ultimate frame. That looks like a slick setup... but for a longer box.
