We are wanting to go to Vancouver Island this summer but it is clearly too late for reservations and would like to try just a bit of wandering around without a reservation plan. Anyone know about this?

The percentage varies depending on the campground. Some are 100% reservable, while others will will have a limited number designated as first come first serve sites. Gbaglo is correct that you can check the
BC Parks to check for specific campgrounds. There is still a chance you can get a reservation if you keep checking the reservation system. It only costs $18 to cancel a reservation so it happens quite frequently. Cancelled sites become available at 7am the next day, so just check each morning. Within a couple weeks of your desired dates there is bound to be some movement!
