How does one be vigilant while sleeping in a tent?

I wouldn't imagine this had anything to do with camping. I really have to wonder what transpired here.

Couple days ago a kid's hockey coach and father was shot and killed while sitting in his truck in his driveway in Cloverdale. He was not known to police and liked by all. Take heed.

It’s a crazy and violent world at times. The old Boy Scout alarm system of tin cans suspended by fishing line strung around the camp perimeter was
Ok in the 50’s but would probably get you a littering fine, a noisy camp fine, and a don’t feed the bears fine, unless the cans were washed and boiled out sterile in today’s world. On a positibve note we drove through Lake Macbride state park CG tonight. Less than 20% occupancy, very very quiet, and 19 dollars a night for sewer, water, electric and hot showers in a pretty new shower house. Nice restaurants now in the nearby big town of Solon, Iowa. Oh, and free oak firewood in the south campground.

Yikes!

I read about this today and apparently this campground has had shootings in the recent past. There is some concern that there may be a local shooter doing this at random. People have reported shots at night as well as a woman who was in her car, either in the campground or quite near it, who had a narrow miss. Police recovered the billet from her car, which missed her by about an inch.

Sad world. This is reputed to be one of the most beautiful campgrounds in California, too.

Sadly, we don't always get warning. However, I feel compelled to add: if you ever get an icky vibe from people - ESPECIALLY in an isolated situation: PLEASE move on. LISTEN TO YOUR GUT: you are probably picking up on something, and your safety is well worth the inconvenience.

[I'm fine with off beat/non-mainstreams, but I used to do a lot of solo backpacking and bicycle touring/camping. For example, there are certain generally instinctively understood sets of etiquette among strangers happening across each others' paths in the wilderness. Moving on wasn't as simple as hopping in a car, but I sure slept a whole lot better the rare (only two, over a period of decades,) times I felt some one (or some two or more) were not quite safe, calmly decamped, or calmly changed direction, and moved on down the way.]

For sure: FAR more commonly, I've enjoyed countless serendipitous encounters!
