Camping Around Portland, OR
There's a chance we may be in the Portland area in August. In searching for campgrounds in that area, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of them! So, to "thin the herd", I'm looking for recommendations for good spots within, say, a 10-mile radius of the city where we can park our 19. Private, state or federal, any will do. Fire away....

Stayed at the Jantzen Island RV park dozens of times. Well maintained, convenient, relatively roomy sites, convenient to markets and shopping, reasonably priced. Just off of I-5, north of downtown. Airplanes taking off can be noisey.

The state campground Champoeg is really nice. Lots to do with a museum, bike paths, walking trails, etc.

Nice state park; there's a fiberglass trailer rally in April so there should be a bit of posts about it. Actually it's only about 10 miles from my house. Nice paved bike trail (recovered by Rails to Trails program) about 15 miles long and shady.

Rooster Rock State Park in the Columbia Gorge is nice. I've heard Pheasant Ridge RV Park in Wilsonville is good although it is more than 10 miles from Portland.

Champoeg is also more than ten miles from Portland; around 30. It is a nice state park - I was at the 2014 Spring NOG, lots of photos here.
I have also stayed at the Portland Fairview RV Park. Very clean, but expensive. A photo of my site here.

Rooster Rock is day use only. If you want to be right in town Fairview is probably the best bet (Jantzen is noisy). There is also a super Walmart and a Camping World close by if you need supplies. If you don't mind the commute into town, Champoeg is wonderful but I-5 is not during rush hour.

If you don't mind being a ways out (up to 45 miles), Ainsworth State Park and Viento State Park are both east of Portland, along the Columbia River, and, as is typical for Oregon state parks, are kept in excellent condition. Appealing features for us, view of the Columbia River (in between the UPRR trains going by), Columbia River gorge, Bonneville Dam, Cascade Locks, and Mt. Hood.

Only thinking about it at this point. Thought we should check out the camping potential early, however. Aisworth State Park looked nice but it's so far out and we really don't want to fight the traffic gong show every day on the way into town.
If we do manage to go to the convention, maybe I should take these along .

Hey Doug, thought so. We were going to head down to Portland as well but we have now opted to head up to Haida Gwaii with the trailer and kayaks for 2 months this summer.

I'll second Rutterslo's recommendation of Jantzen RV Park. We've stayed there several times. It's centrally located, with friendly staff and clean restrooms. And we haven't noticed much airplane noise.

What's the transit situation from Jantzen to the pubs in downtown Portland and back?

yeah funny thing on Hayden Island/ Jantzen beach is I-5 is the only way on/off the area, besides boat so during heavy traffic it can be a bear. We tried to never leave the island during rush hour. coming home from the pub? prolly NOT rush hour!
