California allows 8 hour stays in all it’s rest stops, noisy at times but free. We have stayed in Westgate Landing a county park $20.00 a night no hook ups but they have water. BeunaVista water park near Taft, they have winter rates and ask for a seniors discount and it’s about $23.00 a night full hook ups.

We will never stay in a rest stop again...25 years ago we spent the night on the floor as a few cars decided to rally race between the trailers that were parked in the rest stop. This was on I5 somewhere between BC and Vegas pre cellphones.

Well, there's rest stops and there's rest stops. We've found huge variations in them and major differences between states.

Generally they're our third tier consideration. Casinos are the first choice because they're usually well patrolled. The biggest nuisance would be someone running a generator.

Second would be the Walmart or something similar. We make heavy use of Walmarts though and haven't ever had a problem. A couple of nuisances, someone squealing their tires etc. but no problems. We do take into consideration the location and comments on Free Camping etc. We don't use Walmarts close in to cities or sketchy neighborhoods.

Last choice are reststops but we still use them quite a bit and they vary considerably. Some, like French Prairie, just South of Portland, are great. Three parking areas, each one further away from the highway. Never a problem. One, in Texas, that was more like a private park, couldn't get any better. And then there's some that are noisy etc. Again, we don't use any that are close to big city problems.

I think that the bottom line is to recognize that each situation has to be looked at as a one of a kind situation and evaluated for security and comfort.

Ron was speaking of California . Have had a few very scarey times in Washington too though. You are right about being near big cities . But in California even in morning have had incidents. These are desperate times . Better to be safe. Like the Casino's too for security usually fenced but not all. Even where we live was at least considered a safe city for it population has been changing and not for the good . Drugs are a big problem . In the nice neighborhoods lots of money , nice cars ,etc. draws unwanted attention. Today the problems aren't just in the big cities at least here in California . Just need to be careful. Pat

huh, i've stopped in rest stops a half dozen times to get some ZZZZs on a long drive, typically arriving late at night, and leaving before dawn, and have had zero incidents. only real complaint was the big rigs idling all night long, and our new Escape is amazingly quiet inside (it has the extra insulation and double pane, I'm sure that helps, a lot!)

We have had good luck at rest areas in the US as rv's are routed to the truck areas, away from the automobiles. Most truckers, like Escapers, look out for one another and most come and go all night, with courtesy. Seems like different type of people than those who stop in the automobile sections...just my observations. I leave my trailer lights on, like the big rigs and their diesel motor noise seems to put me to sleep.

Actually Pat, my comments applied to the the 10 provinces and 30 states that we've been in so far. We don't take it for granted that every spot will be suitable. We look at each one individually then decide.

It always amazes me that you can go to sleep with one type of truck beside you and wake up with another. This wasn't the guy that was beside us when we went to bed. You're right, they come and go and mind their own business. I don't mind the engines idling but reefers drive me nuts.

I had a semi idling near me a few nights ago, but it was the genset a motorhome was running which was a bit further away that bothered me more. When I woke up in the morning, the truck was gone and I never heard him roll out and he had to go right by me.

I've overnighted at many WalMarts, some rest stops, truck stops and some casinos. Never a problem - except now I usually avoid the big truck stops because all trucks seem to run their engines all night.

It's a shame that the use of this technology isn't more widespread.

As I said Ron mostly speaking about California which have lived in since I was three. Started out in Bakersflied from East Coast . We live in a pretty safe city which is small and not in LA . It is changing too and not for the good . So far compared to LA and other cities in our county they still have a handle . If you don't experience anything negative that's great just be aware
Even in rural communities drugs are causing a lot of problems . As for semi's , not a problem for us , in fact would rather be parked next to them .Pat

That's a slick solution.

Trucks usually idle for heat or for air conditioning. Heat can be supplied by a diesel-fired heater, and air conditioning can be run from batteries or by a smaller generator. These techniques are used by many trucks, but most have not gone this way yet - they require more equipment, and thus more capital expense, truck weight, and complication.
