Five campgrounds - September 2015

Here are a few comments and pictures about five campgrounds we stayed at five BC campgrounds last September. We’ve benefited from other posters doing this so here goes.

Overview: We traveled between Sept-4 through 18th and had good weather. Roads and campgrounds were not busy. Lots of retired folks at the campgrounds. Our data plan helped us avoid fast food restaurants, since we could search out restaurants and read on-line reviews as we traveled.

Apple Beach, Oliver, BC - three nights
Situated beside a lake in the middle of BC wine country north of Osoyoos. Nice, clean and quiet camp ground. We had a wine tour (vineyards) that picked us up/delivered us at the cg. Lots of CG rules. Not particularly child/pet friendly. We stayed three nights which was one night too many. We enjoyed listening to owls hooting in the willows. We were woken on morning to a woodpecker banging on the roof.

Kokanee Creek Provincial Park near Nelson, BC

Two nights at this popular provincial cg which has been discussed before on this Forum. Great scenery. We ended up choosing a site that was ‘bushy’ but had some sun. Later we noticed some sites which were in evergreen ‘forest like’ area which we would have preferred. A highlight was watching a black bear fishing for her supper. Salmon was spawning - something very wonderful to see.

We then headed north to Kaslo and stayed one night at the Kaslo Municipal CG. Clean cg and very helpful CG hosts. The price was $25. Kaslo is set amongst spectacular mountains. We were within walking distance of the town. Interesting place to spend a day/night.

We then drove east to stay two nights at Nakusp Hot Springs. The springs are eighteen Ks off the main highway up in the mountains at the end of a windy road. The cg is near a creek. The hot springs are relaxing. An easy hike to the water source was another trip highlight.

Our last cg was two nights at Kekuli Bay Provincial Park near Vernon. This is a popular cg in the summer time. In September all the other campers appeared to be over 60 (like us). Kekuli has spacious sites and it seemed like they all have good views of the lake.

Thanks for posting! We love Kokanee Creek and plan to return when the salmon are spawning. Great shot of the black bear.

The Kootenays are one of my favourite areas in BC. Thanks for sharing your input into these campgrounds. Kokanee Creek is actually the only one I have stayed at, and that was in our tent trailer, well over 20 years ago.
