Grasslands National Park Saskatchewan

We have just returned for a great trip through the southern Canadian Prairies. One destination was Grasslands Park. When we drove into our campsite there were 5 other RV's and 2 were Escapes. So when we arrived, 50% of the RV's were Escapes. How often does that happen??
I have a blog for park at his link; Focused on Fauna (and a little flora)

Grasslands report

Hi Len
I really enjoyed your report. I wondered right off if you saw bobolinks. We used to see them when I was younger but not much in Iowa now. Badgers fascinate me. Those critters can surely dig. Thanks for the report.

Thanks Dave. One of our missions of old age is finding birds and Bobolinks are not that easy to find anymore. We are in our 70's now and that is only the 3rd time I have seen a badger, never mind photograph one..

Great photos Len. I've been to Grasslands several times, never camped there. Was always cautious of some of the roads there while towing a trailer due to potholes and missing edges. What route did you take? And what lens do you use?

He doesn't need a lens. He's got the eye and the skills.

Thanks Chris. We took the road from Hwy 1 to Gull Lake down to Val Marie. Probably averaged 40 mph but the roads were very passable. Even the back roads over to East Bloc were no problem. Just have to go slow. My camera equipment is a Canon 5D MKIII and the lens is 100-400 with a 1.4 T/C.

Bobolinks

Really enjoy your blog and wonderful photographs! I volunteer here for a group trying to preserve bobolink habitat through delayed mowing. Our fields were full of them when I was a child, their cheerful burble said "It's SUMMERTIME" to me. Anyone out there who can delay mowing their fields until late July will allow any resident grassland birds to fledge.

Delayed mowing

Delayed mowing is the key for many birds that are experiencing declining populations. We had a group of field trial hunters acquire a permit to manage a brushy area near a state recreation area. They removed the invasive brush ( honeysuckle and multiflora rose) and replanted native grasses. The bobolinks came back. They planted birds and had a few field trials in the fall. Everything was going well. A young DNR biologist who did not understand that bobolinks were long gone before the field trials were held, learned of the nesting bobolinks. She had enough authority to cancel the permit as the bobolinks were on the watch list. Which she did. Field trialers went somewhere else. Brush came back because the state did not burn off in February or March. Bobolinks went away. Everybody lost. Wildlife balance and interaction is very finely tuned. I read “ A Sand County Alamanac” every winter. It puts the World in perspective for me.
