Lava Beds NM $10/night(or $5 w/Sr. Pass)

Really nice and all sites are first come. Caves are numerous and amazing. Met Doug & Dawn from "the Wack" in their 19 with Mr. Cool Cat

I agree that this is a nice campground. I stopped at the Lava Beds visitors center at the end of last July, but didn't stay because the temperature was over 100 degrees and the campground had no hookups. I hope to go back in cooler weather sometime.

The area has caves that contain ice all year round. Given it's so hot there in the summer I had to think this over, but I guess as long as more water freezes in winter than melts in summer you can have year-round ice caves.

The Lava Beds is in our backyard. Maybe 40 miles south.

Nice campground. I believe it's open year round, at least one loop. If you go in February it isn't 100 degrees. Also in Feb. the crowds are down. We've been there when we were the only campers. That was a nice trip.

Thanks. Next time give us a call.

Campground was 80% or so full when we arrived at noon yesterday (Sat) , now it's almost empty. Weather is pretty perfect: 70/40.

We just pulled in and set up at the KOA off exit 81 off of I40 near EL Malpais Notional Conservation Area with our new 19 in the mist of the LAVA flow field
